Belagavi: Hope ends, 6-year-old girl's body retrieved from borewell

Belagavi, Apr 25 (DHNS): Hopes ended for the family of six-year-old Kaveri Madar late on Monday night, when rescue workers brought out her body from the borewell at Jhunjurwada in Athani taluk, into which she had fallen on Saturday.

The body was recovered at 11.30 pm, after a 54-hour operation. However, the girl is yet to be declared dead officially. The body, wrapped in white cloth, was taken in an ambulance to the primary health centre at Kokatnur, where the girl’s mother Savita has been admitted. Savita had taken ill due to the trauma of the incident.

Superintendent of Police Ravikante Gowda told reporters it was painful the rescue operation ended on a sad note. The girl’s body would be handed over to her family after the post mortem, he said.

The girl was stuck at around 25 feet in the 400-foot-deep borewell. Intensive excavation work had been undertaken to access the girl, but rocky terrain had hampered the rescue operations.

The footage of the camera that was dropped into the borewell, along with oxygen supply pipeline, showed that the girl was buried under mud.

Rescue teams involving experts from National Disaster Response Force, Hutti Gold Mines and Fire and Emergency services had taken part in the exercise.

Besides local police and officials of various departments, 20 personnel of NDRF, Pune, are involved in the operations. Fifteen Army personnel, 25 experts from Hutti Gold Mines and the disaster helpline centre of Maharashtra are also part of the rescue efforts.

ZP to close defunct borewells in 3 days

The Bagalkot ZP has resolved to close all the dried up borewells in the district within three days, reports DHNS. The issue came up during the meeting on Monday, in the wake of a six-year-old girl falling into a borewell in Jhunjurwada in?Belagavi district.

The ZP members unanimously adopted a resolution to close all the dried up borewells and entrust the responsibility to the PDOs. It was also decided that criminal case would be registered against the PDOs who fail to follow the direction. Thimmanna (6) died after falling into an 180-foot open borewell in his land in Sulikeri village of Bagalkot taluk on August 3, 2014. A criminal case was registered against Thimmanna’s father and the PDO. The officer was suspended in this connection after which PDOs went on a strike. The suspension was revoked subsequently.

A simple metal grill (safety cover) might have prevented this grievous incident where an innocent life was lost.

    RIP to the little girl.

Elsewhere in industrial and developed nations the borewell's owner might have been booked for failing to cover the borewell.

    Alas! ONLY in INDIA.

Sad.and tragic end of this girl.Heartfelt sympathy to her family.may her soul rest in peace.Second I cant understand this formality of her death to be declared officially .why cant a doctor of locality declare it?Why post martum ?she was not killed is a known.simply making her parents more painful. Many times post martum is not needed. In suecide case is ok.

My heart cries reading this news. A innocent child got killed due to negligence. Just wondering how could anyone keep the bore opening on ? Is this not carelessness ? A precious life has gone just by sheer ignorance.

Govt should not give any compensation in these cases, otherwise some greedy people may start delebratly throwing girl child & claim compensation. Police should get a proper Postmortem & should do through enquiry about such incidents. It seems now-a-days only girl childs fall to borewell.
I am not judging that this has happened in this case, but there is a possibility, must double verify these incidents.

God gave us knowledge, thinking power, and responsibility. But we all forget that. What a sad news. Children are like angles and need much attention, and we all forget that.

May her soul rest in peace and strength to her family members, Amen.

Why can't individuals who dug borewells take this seriously and close the borewells which are open? How many more death should happen to take this step?

I don't understand the logic behind this post-mortem. For every Tom Dick and Harry we have this? Is there a logic behind this? It is a clear cut case that the girl died due to asphyxia (lack of oxygen and related issues) and yet a post-mortem to be done. For God sake, give us a break from this red -tape and bureaucracy. It is nothing but looting of internal organs too make quick bucks.

Very sad. We have outdated technology to retrieve people trapped in bore well etc. God knows what will now happen to the mother?

This incident SHOULD NEVER HAVE happened. Now retrieve the blood money from the land owner who was careless resulting in the girls death.

Very sad story, indeed. So many similar incidents, is there any Law that compels these irresponsible land owners to be bit more educated? How much of State resources we use because of the negligence of one man?

Post mortem is necessary and legal , because a murder has to be ruled out. Ours is a society that burnt women on husbands funeral pyre not long ago. It will take a century more to guarantee safety to girls and women in our country.
