Kasargod, Apr 24: A 17-year-old girl was killed after a Maruti Omni veered off the road and overturned at Badiadka here on Monday April 24.

The deceased has been identified as Arpita, daughter of Sheshappa Naik and Saraswati, residents of Bantaradka, Bela here.

Arpita was a plus-1 (class 11) student of Annapoorneshwari Higher Secondary School in Badiadka.

The accident took place in front of the Badiadka police station.

It is said that on Sunday April 23, Sheshappa Naik, his wife and their children Ajay Kumar and Arpita had been to a relative's house at Puttur Kumbrabolad to attend a wedding. After the wedding, they started their homeward journey at around 2 am. When they reached Badiadka early morning, the Omni van went out of control and overturned.

Arpita's parents and brother who were in the car escaped with minor injuries.

It is said that due to the impact of the accident, the door of the Omni opened and Arpita fell out, sustaining critical head injuries. She was rushed to a private hospital in Kasargod but breathed her last on the way.

The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem at Kasargod general hospital.

It is learnt that Arpita's brother Ajay was driving the Omni.

Aprita had written her plus-1 exams in March and was awaiting her results.

Badiadka police have registered a case.

Firstly, heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. Surely, losing a young family member is a huge irreplaceable loss. RIP Arpita. Surely, the family, especially the brother would have been devastated. Secondly, this is a reminder for all of us to learn and practice safety rules in our lives all the time. Rest, death will come when it will come. May God give strength to the family of Arpita to bear the loss of their young one.

Some people seem to be unaware of the statistics on driver-age-related accidents.

Agree, India does not seem to bother about such statistics.

But, as usual, many Western countries maintain statistics on driver-age-related accidents.

In USA, report after report indicates that the numbers are incredibly high with teenage drivers, and progressively taper down until the retirement age.

Insurance companies have premium disparity depending on the age of the driver.

But, as usual, Indians attribute accidents to a lack of ABS brakes and airbags.

Well, bullock-carts do not have ABS brakes and airbags. But they do not "go out of control" and overturn.

    So, my suggestion is simple:

Do not let a young person drive you to a hospital or a morgue!

A very sad and unfortunate accident which killed Arpita as the Omni in which she was traveling with her family overturned at Badiadka. May her soul rest in eternal peace and condolences to the entire bereaved family. I do not know how her brother must be feeling as he was driving the vehicle.

The article says "It is learnt that Arpita's brother Ajay was driving the Omni".

If Arpita was 17, I can assume the brother was no more than 20 years of age.

Most serious motor-vehicle accidents happen when they are driven by people who are less than 30 years of age.

The younger the driver, the more serious the accident.

So, my simple suggestion to people:

If a person younger than 30 years of age is driving the vehicle, regardless of the time and the terrain, get out of the vehicle before it starts moving.

Life is precious. While a death may be preferable to becoming bed-ridden for life, it is best to retain the wonderful body we have!

So, do not get into a vehicle driven by a young person. A young person driven vehicle ALWAYS goes out of control.

I don't agree with you. Your opinion is absolutely wrong. So you mean 30+ dont meet accidents? They do meet . Accidents can be reduced if Indian automobiles are manufactured with safety . Omni is not fit for long ride sir. I have driven Omni . Not at all fit to curves . It's hard to drive a Omni in curves . During greater impact survival chances in Omni in very less. Have you ever thought how safe top selling Indian cars are safe ? Watch NCAP tests made on Indian automobiles. you will come to know how safe are Indian Top selling cars lol. 0 ratings. No ABS nothing . NO AIRBAGS . People don't wear seatbelts compulsory in India . It should be a Daily routine to do that . Whenever we turn up the engine seatbelts should be worn. Not only driver/pilot but every passenger should wear that which will save lives sir. RTO and NGO's should make this compulsory. Just think isn't it right what I have said here ! ?

I am wondering how you arrived at a conclusion of this nature. Are you a wayside fortune teller? Furthermore, why didn't you say that brother Ajay HAD a licence to drive the Omni Vant? You should have been confident of this too. Isn't it? Such things can/may happen if you visualize things differently or you are paranoia with age,
