Mangaluru, Apr 22: The complaint made by the family of Ahmed Qureshi that city crime branch police had tortured him when he was in their custody resulting in damage to his kidney, has been taken up by the criminal investigation department (CID) as per the government directive. A team led by CID superintendent of police (SP), Siri Gowri, arrived here on Friday, April 21.
The team began its investigation immediately after its arrival at New Mangalore Port Trust's guest house at Panambur. The team questioned Qureshi's brother, Nishad. After interrogating a few more people connected with the case, the team will be submitting its report to the government.
City crime branch police had taken Qureshi into custody in connection with murder attempt on Jokatte Prakash Poojary. Popular Front of India had staged a protest and tried to lay siege to the office of the city police commissioner recently, alleging that Qureshi had been tortured by police. On April 17, the government had passed an order entrusting investigation into the case to CID.
