Hassan: Oblivious to demonetisation - hearing, speech impaired woman loses life's earnings

Daijiworld Media Network - Hassan (SP)

Hassan, Apr 21: A lady from the town, who is deaf and dumb, has meagre earning. But she has been saving every penny she could, since young, for her future. As per a report published by The Hindu, the woman, Meenakshi (40), holds Rs 1.39 lac in demonetised currency notes of Rs 1,000 and 500 value, and realized just two days back that they do not have any value other than scrap. Meenakshi is unable to bear the agony of having to watch her hard work over several years going down the drain in this way. With animated gestures, she is trying to plead with everyone to help her to somehow exchange these currency notes.

Out of six children of Laxmidevi and Narasimha Shetty couple from here, Meenakshi and two of her brothers cannot hear or speak. She lives with mother and a younger brother, and her father breathed his last over a decade back. The mother-daughter duo works as domestic servants. Meenakshi earns about Rs 1,500 a month out of work as domestic servant and Rs 1,200 as disabled pension. Her mother says that Meenakshi carefully kept everything she earned with herself. "Meenakshi has been very particular about keeping her savings with herself, after spending only for bare necessities. Her total saving works out to Rs 1,39,000 so far," she stated. The money so saved includes gifts received from relatives and kind-hearted people on various occasions and local festivals. Meenakshi, it is gathered, kept the quantum of money she has saved a closely guarded secret.

The family lives in a house by paying rent of Rs 1,200 per month. Meenakshi's brother, Nagaraj, says that after demonetisation exercise was announced, himself and other members of the family had questioned Meenakshi whether she held any old currency notes but she steadfastly refused to disclose any information. He feels that she was fearful of losing the money if she handed it over to others, without realizing the seriousness of such an action. He stated that Meenakshi properly understood what a grave decision she had taken, after the lady for whom she works explained to her in detail two days back.

Meenakshi, it is said, does not have any bank account. Her mother says that Meenakshi hoped to pool enough money to build a home for herself and acquire some jewellery. Lakshmidevi is heart-broken at the prospect of losing the entire life's savings of her daughter in one go. She hopes that the government will come to the rescue of the lady, who worked hard over the years to save money for the future.

Some close relatives of the family have visited various offices including district administration in a bid to exchange the old currency notes. So far, none has been able to help as the deadline for exchange of these notes expired long back. There are a few who are ready to make small donations but no one has a solution to Meenakshi's problem as of now.

Sad as this case seems to be portrayed!.. still .. Ignorance of the law is no excuse!!
The Law affected everyone and it was in the news for some time as well. If this is a sincere case then it is an isolated one. I am sure they will be provided some relief after scrutiny. Remember this could have been her cash earnings that may not have been disclosed. There is no point blaming Modi, he actually turned things around and hurt the big players and the parallel economy.

This is not the only case there are millions of cases like this throughout India. Poor people specially daily wagers feel insecure to disclose their possessions to others however close they are for being targeted and robbed. Surely Demonitisation hasn't helped the poor in any way instead it was forced upon them for no reason for nothing in return and they are the worst victims of this brutal and selfish idea of BJP. The one who were the intended target of this Demonitisation together with govt are safe and very comfortable and all thier illgotten wealth is intact with blessings and security from the very govt who initiated this Demonitisation. It's Demonising the poor.

Recently MCC evicted footpath vendors. was not that an attack on the poor? has it not deprived many small vendors of their livelihhood. Some may attempt sucide as they are dependent on this income only. where do you stand on this issue?

Supreme court ordered evicting all liquor shops near highways. Do you no the number of people loosing Jobs by this move? at least a million. those bar employees are very poor. so will you blame the supreme court for their plight?

Demonetisation is an investment ito the future. there will be problems in the near term but demonetisation has launched the first step towards clean money. after demonetisation more & more people are using digital money. in a few years from now it will be difficult to generate black money.

Ok Rajesh now we are talking. First of all foot path is constructed for padestrians and not for vendors. Now since Mangalore is declared as smart city it should also present itself to that name and maintain and compete with the cities of that caliber not only India but globally. Moreover city must have issued notice of evacuation well in advance to these illegal vendors and seek alternate arrangements for thier business. Now do you think setting up liquor shops and alcohol bars on highways is a wise idea???. You can evaluate yourself, I don't have to elaborate that the risks, dangers and lives and lives of loved ones involved apart from destruction and wastage of goods and merchandise they carrying. Demonitisation would have been a good idea provided it was transparent and not one sided, targeted and self serving intention in mind. There were Demonitisation in the past from other govt but wasn't so chaotic and destructive as this and were conducted carefully without hurting the poor.

The fake currency was being used for subversive activities in India. the cash economy was responsible for generation of black money since cash transactions does not leave a trail. these black money goes out of India. these black mone are used by politicians for their election caampaigns. these money was used to buy benami properties. therefore benefits out weigh the problems. these days there is a fear for hoarding black mony. even the rs.2000 may be demonetised we never know.

if it was a prepared campaign, there was a risk of large scale filght of money outside India through the hawala route and would have been roud tripped. therefore secrecy was mainained.

The benefeciaries of the black money ad fake currency vehemently argue against demonetisation.

How many millions??? Where is the proof... I can show you the proof where politicians (Kolar District) gave money to poor people to convert into white, so will you take gurantee that all these are genuine cases...

In Genuine cases central and state government should compensate if its a true story, without accepting this demonetized currency notes... If we make this has a practice then we will see long queue from old to young asking for compensation to convert black money into white

    Don't bark without proof

This looks like a ploy by the Congress. Enough notice and time was given, the neighbours or the locally elected representatives of these people should have come forward as the whole nation was impacted. But the so called local leaders preferred to wait and cash in on this oppurtunity. When Siddu can provide some Bhagyas we have to ensure these poor people too qualify.

Yes. Country was on wheels during Vajpayee rule. Now the country is ruling in four legs walking in a snails pace.

Rome was not built in 3 years. It took several years to build.

Your supersonic jets can move only in the air, whereas the spare parts used to it are from the foreign countries.

WHY THEN SUCH A BIG DEAL WITH ISRAEL FOR THE PURCHASE OF BOMBS AND JETS. POOR INDIANS ARE SUFFERING WITHOUT JOBS AND INCREASED PRICES OF NECESSARY COMMODITIES.

In genuine cases like this RBI and government must allow to exchange the old demonetized notes even after the expiry of given deadline. There may be many more cases like this. Hope the authorities will take a lenient approach in this case and will not file a case against her for possessing old demonetized notes. unfortunately people like Meenakshi are the victims of demonetization.
