Mangaluru: MCC officials clear vendors on footpaths at Hampankatta, Central Market

Mangaluru, Apr 19: The officials of Mangaluru City Corporation on Wednesday April 19 morning demolished petty shops on footpaths in Nellikai road, Hampankatta, and Central Market under police protection.

The shop owners in Hampanakatta alleged that the MCC undertook demolition without prior notice. In Central Market, some of the vendors protested the evacuation.

Speaking to daijiworld, revenue officer Praveen Chandra Karkera said that though prior notice was not issued, the mayor had informed about the evacuation through the media two days ago.

"The main motto of evacuation is to have clean footpaths and provide free walkway to pedestrians. Many complaints have been received by pedestrians about these petty shops and vendors on footpaths," he said.

"In Hampankatta, the vendors and traders had encroached the entire footpath, so much so that pedestrians are forced to use the main road, in turn affecting traffic. MCC is planning to solve traffic issues in the city, and this is the first step in the plan. In the coming days, officials will shut all footpath businesses in the city," Karkera said.

    Most of the street vendors are from other districts of Karnataka and states. Municipalities should not allow street vendors and mobile food outlets to run business.

    It is a good move by MCC the footpath has been used by goons and then it becomes difficult in future to remove them. The decision taken by the MCC at right time. No more encroachment at the football make the mangalore clean and green. Please dont give licence to this goons who occupy the footpath and then with the help of political parties make permanent place.

    All outsiders are the vendors after selling flowers they put waste on Road side
    Many Morning walkers including me facing big difficulties on stretch from Ladyhil up managudda
    By this flower vendors forced to walk on Road
    I request MCC Authority of clear this problem

    Well appreciated. But they start again. Also there are petty shops and fish vendors all over on the footpaths as well on the roads even. Please take necessary action to remove all these.

    Members of the corporation and the Mayor,tomorrow morning have a round to the places where you had removed the vendor . Ground reality will be different. Same vendors will be having their sale their. Can any one explain what is the position at statebank. Vendors are back again.

    Street vendors are poor traders who try to make a living by selling this on the footpath. Once their business is shifted their fmailies will suffer Instead I feel they may be offered a place in city where they can do busines May areas like Bus station or rialway station they may be offered a place to sell things/ TThe authorities charge them for making use of the space too We need good footpaths at the same time we must supoort poor traders too

    Good to clear the footpaths so that the Pedestrians can walk on them. But we can see vehicles being parked on the footpaths at various places like side of Canara Club, Karri, Light house hill and many other areas. MCC should have zero tolerance to these offences and should use the Traffic Police to take stern action against such violations. Each and every day this is happening and we can see Students, Elderly and the general public had to use the main road to walk. There should be a strong signal sent to the vehicle owners that the Footpaths cannot be used for their parking and such violations should be punished by towing away the vehicle. The Pedestrians should rise up take up this issue with the authorities. Although such use of Footpaths has been brought to the notice of Traffic Police, they are helpless spectators. So far the Second road is considered as allowed parking as Police pass by without taking any action. Soon all the Footpaths will also be covered with vehicles and we will find People walking on the road at the mercy of the careless drivers. If immediate action is not taken to stop this menace, the purpose behind spending so much money to construct Footpaths will be a futile exercise. All Commercial establishments should have ample parking space without which such establishments should not be given Trade Licences or allowed to function. All Commercial spaces and establishments should be assessed as to the Parking Space provided for its customers before renewing its licence. Because of the lapse on the part of MCC in this area people are parking on the second road constructed recently for the smooth flow of traffic and is resulting in traffic jams. I earnestly hope the authorities will wake up and attend to these issues. It is not enough to clear only the vendors on footpaths at Hampankatta but it is necessary clear all the Vehicles too from the footpaths urgently. FOOTPATHS ARE FOR PEOPLE AND NOT FOR PEOPLE'S VEHICLES.

    You destroy their bread and butter and they will take up criminal ways to make money and fulfill their basic family needs. Do not go ga-ga later.
    Better make good arrangements for these street vendors who earn their livelihood through some human way.
    This is India – 3rd world county, and do not compare market conditions to America or other 1st world countries and destroy poor people's lives.

    Hope all can walk on footpaths. hope some will get parking space. Some lives will be saved from Rash drivers while walking on the road. If no action is taken against illegal shops, how can this city become a SMART CITY? That's the dream of our PM.

    MCC has given prior notice to all to vacate the place , and they have been given alternate place to do thuer business,
    this is very much required to control crowd and trafic and clanlyness of the market surroudings, now market place having much place to park vehicals and more ever people to walk freely,
    good job done MCC. there must be strict and strong rules to do sort of busiess within the city level.

    There are illegal Advertisement hoardings in and around Mangalore ,why corporation is silent in that matter. Many Hoardings of Cila Advertisers are without License. Corporation officials are scared to remove the hoarding just because the agency is backed up by local MLA.

    It is very sad to remove these road side vendors who sell some local merchandise to earn some money. What about the big sharks who keep the merchandise on the footpath and are a big obstruction to all the pedestrians using the central market and are forced to use the road than the footpath. The MCC should look into the shops using the footpath which is meant for pedestrians. MCC should repair all the footpaths near the central market and charge all motor vehicles using the central market, if this is done then see the difference.

    Smart city needs to be clean and tidy.
    Proper foot faths is a must for commuters, which can abvoid accidents and traffic congestion.
    In the eventuality prices of fruits & vegitable may hike temporarily in coming days.
    How come Corporation authorities wake up once in few months.

    I never support this attack on ordinary people who are making a small living.A family with two children certainly depend on this business for their daily bread. Where will these poor people go.If justice has to be done let the big sky scrapper building who have made encroachment be demolished .

    What about the Rich builders who have encroached the footpath area & allotted the basement parking to shops and Business without allowing proper space for the Parking ,why only on statebank area footpaths ,let this JCB machine run upon the illegal Commercial building in and around mangalore .what about the resorts acquiring the back water area by fiiling waste building materials and extending the resort areas in the Coast of the City ,why MCC & District administration has NO so much guts to DO these things ,God Save my CITY.......

    Welcome move no doubt....Its not proper to sell in the footpaths...but atleast an Hour or Two could have been given to the poor hawkers to vacate the footpaths.....(not all read newspapaers).

    What about the hundreds of Billboards (without licence) which deface the city....(Politicians,religious ,coaching classes...etc etc)

    What is the use in clearing vendors now and then? Within 2 - 3 days they will come back and settle down in their respective place as if it is their ancestral property. MCC should provide them a suitable place for carrying out their petty business.

    Alternate space, with large area, is already provided with interlocking bricks on the ground, west of the town hall and north of of the service bus stand. But nobody wants to shift there, fearing loss of business volumes.

    Loss or gain thats immaterial. they have first occupied that area, celebrated the event and within 2 to 3 days returned to their original place. They should have continued their business there in the allotted space. Is there any meaning to occupy the public footpaths for their trade purpose. The street vendors are unnecessarily creating problems.
