Mangaluru, Apr 17: City police commissioner, Chandra Sekhar, has confirmed that the health condition of arrested accused, Ahmed Qureshi, who was admitted into Wenlock Hospital here continues to be stable. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday April 16, he requested the people not to give credence to false information being spread by unscrupulous people by making use of WhatsApp and social websites.
"Some individuals and organizations backed by vested interests, have been engaged in spreading false information about the health condition of Ahmed Qureshi. They have been falsely claiming that Qureshi's condition is serious. The health condition of Qureshi, who was arrested in a case pertaining to murder attempt on Prakash Poojary registered in Suratkal police station, is stable.
"The people behind this mischief want to incite people to get involved with criminal activities and create an environment of animosity, mistrust and disturbance. A case against the people behind these acts has already been registered in the city (east) police station. We have collected information about individuals and admins of WhatsApp groups which have been spreading such rumours and we are taking steps to file cases against them under IT Act," he explained.
He said that Qureshi, who was being treated at Wenlock Hospital, was shifted to a private hospital, adding that at is request, he has again been admitted into Wenlock Hospital, and that the health officers have confirmed that his health is stable.
The commissioner said that Qureshi has been an accused in murder case of Sudarshan from Suratkal which happened in 2014, and murder attempt on Prakash Poojary from Jokatte. "He confessed to crimes during police interrogation. His family had alleged that police had tortured him and his kidney had failed. A departmental inquiry headed by deputy commissioner of police is being held in this aspect, and report will be filed after pooling all kinds of evidences and information," he added.
He further clarified that Qureshi had been taken to prison in police security after the conclusion of his routine treatment at the hospital.
In the meanwhile, owners of a private television channel here have complained to police stating that their logo, water mark and bottom news scrolls are being modified by unknown people who have been spreading rumour that Ahmed Qureshi's condition is serious.
Kadri police, who have registered the complaint, are investigating.
Police beat system
The police commissioner stated that as per the instructions of the director general of police of Karnataka, police beat system in the city has been reorganized by posting one police personnel for every beat. He said that the staff allotted to a particular beat will be entirely responsible for service of summons, warrants, law and order problems and crime control issues of that particular beat. He added that details of this system has been provided in the website, www.mangalorecitypolice.com. Altogether, 480 police personnel have been assigned to different areas in the city under the beat system.
