Seven students, teacher from Belagavi drown off Maharashtra coast

Sindhudurg (Maharashtra), Apr 15 (IANS): Seven engineering students, three of them female, and their teacher from Belagavi in Karnataka drowned in the sea off Malvan, Sindhudurg, here on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Another three students were rescued by local fisherfolk. One of the students is in serious condition and undergoing treatment at Malvan hospital, said Sindhudurg Police Control official Ravindra Zarkar.

The victims were part of a 50-strong group of picknickers from Maratha Mandal Engineering College, Belgaum. They arrived here early on Saturday in a private bus and went to the picturesque Wayri Beach.

Shortly after reaching here, the students, allegedly ignoring warnings by locals of strong currents, ventured into the sea and were soon washed away into deep waters, said Zarkar.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of 11 students went into the sea when a massive wave suddenly swept them into deep waters, leading to the tragedy.

Fisherfolk managed to rescue three of them. They later retrieved the bodies of the other eight, including the three young women.

Top police and district officials arrived at the scene of the tragedy from Sindhudurg, around 35 km away.

The victims were identified as Prof. Mahesh, 40, Karuna Barde, Aarti Chavan, Maya Kolhe, Kiran Khandekar, Nitin Mutlatkar, Avdhut Tahsildar, Mujamin Aniket, all aged between 21-22 years.

    RIP to the young deceased.

After so many deaths from picnics to the beaches; yet ironically every year college students and their professors turn up in large numbers for the sacrifice to the water gods.

After all the numerous deaths on picnic trips; Shouldn't we, couldn't we learn and stay away from the bad master?

Very sad indeed. A great tragedy. High tide was this afternoon at Malvan around 2 pm. It would be good if the population were educated about Undercurrents (Riptides, Undertow) near the beaches of the ocean and lakes. Beneath the surface there are sometimes strong unseen currents, tides or streams that are moving out away from the beach, out to sea. Even the best swimmers may be victims if caught up as it is often impossible to swim back to the beach against the strong flow of current out to sea. It is sometimes taught that once one is caught in such a current and finds oneself unable to escape and swim back against that current, that one may try to swim at a right angle ( 90 degrees) a bit to escape the pull and direct current of the undertow, and once escaping the current then swim back to the beach. Perhaps it would be advantageous for the population to be aware of this phenomenon and educated. Also seek advice from lifeguards and fishermen so that we may avoid such tragedies in the future.

What a tragedy? 8 engineering students drown. Cant believe it. Students should not be allowed to swim in the sea unless they know to swim. If this is the case then how can the parents send their children to tours, picnics. etc.

Looking at the number of engineering students getting drowned every year, it seems they are obsessed with the experimental verification of Archimedes' principle of buoyancy.

Very Sad News. Such drowning incidents happen somewhere every now and then but no end to the tragedy. Grown up children going for tour have no idea about the sea how dangerous it is.It is difficult to control them especially at Sea Shores by the teachers . Precaution may help.
