Beltangady, Apr 13: Santhosh Rao, the lone accused in the rape and murder of Sowjanya, has been granted bail by the special CBI court in Bengaluru.
Santhosh Rao, a resident of Bajagoli, Karkala, was arrested on October 11, 2012, two days after 17-year-old Sowjanya was found dead in a desolate spot in wooded area at Dharmasthala. He was said to be mentally ill at the time of the arrest.
Though Sowjanya's parents and activists had named four others as suspects, Santhosh was the lone accused in chargesheet filed by the CID. The CBI too, after taking charge of the case, gave clean chit to the others while investigation was on against Santhosh.
Now that four-and-a-half years of inquiry against Santhosh is over, the CBI court on Thursday April 13 granted bail to him.
Advocates Karunakar and Mohit are the counsel for Santhosh.
Santhosh is presently lodged in Mangaluru jail and will be released soon.
