Mangaluru, Apr 13: KMC Hospitals gave a fresh lease of life to 75-year-old Rama Rao by removing a muskmelon size 14 cm long tumor present in the right lobe of his liver. The surgery lasted for 12 grueling hours and was performed by competent team of expert doctors led by Dr Samesh Padman Surgical Gastroenterologist, Liver and Pancreas Surgeon, KMC Hospital and Dr Satyanarayana N, Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary and Minimally Invasive Surgeon, KMC Hospital Mangaluru.
Rao was having difficulty while eating food and drinking water. He experienced breathlessness for close to an year. He was diagnosed by the expert team of Gastroenterologist at KMC Hospital Ambedkar Circle. A huge tumor was found to be growing in the right lobe of his liver. He was further referred to the Surgical Gastroenterology team for further treatment. This condition required surgical intervention.
A liver tumor is an abnormal growth or mass found in the liver. Several distinct types of tumors can develop in the liver as the organ is made up of various cell types. Such tumors can be secondary or primary tumors. The most common liver tumor is a secondary (metastatic) tumor. This means that the tumor has spread to the liver (metastasized) from its original source of origin in another part of the body. Primary liver tumors begin their existence in the liver.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Samesh Padman said, “This tumor growth requires major surgical intervention that involves removal of the entire right lobe of the liver. Post a 12-hour long surgery, the patient was shifted to the ward within 24 hours. He was under observation for five days. As post operation recovery was good and uneventful, he was discharged on the fifth day with normal dietary recommendations.”
Speaking on the occasion Dr Satyanarayana N, said, “In case of tumors of Gastro intestinal tract and liver and pancreas, surgery is the only hope of cure. Surgery can be safely performed on patients with good outcome irrespective of age. Surgery can be the only potential cure for dangerous tumors if consulted early.”
