Mangaluru, Apr 12: Three compartments of Karwar-Yeshwantpur day train have been removed. The railway department says that this measure has been taken in view of lack of commuters. As a result, the number of compartments in the train has been pruned down to 15 from earlier 18.
The train, which leaves Karwar at 5.30 am, reaches Kankanady Junction station at 10.55 am. It leaves from Kankanady at 11.10 and reaches Yeshwantpur at 10 pm. This train moves on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The train starting from Yeshwantpur leaves at 6.30 am and reaches Kankanady at 5.40 pm. It leaves from there at 6 and reaches Karwar at 11 pm. This train is run on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. There have been complaints that the timing of this train is not convenient for the people of the coast.
This train that moves via Subrahmanya and Hassan, currently has a compartment of AC chair car, nine second class reservation compartments, six general compartments, and two guard (SLR) compartments. Now, two of the second class reservation compartments have been taken off, and one among the seven general compartments has been cut off. South-west railways said this change was brought into effect from April 10 onwards.
The people of coastal Karnataka have demanded to run this train via Shravanabelagola, which will cut short journey time by around three hours. They feel that the arrival time of the train at Yeshwantpur should be much earlier, as they find it hard to reach far off places within Bengaluru through buses after the train reaches Yeshwantpur at 10 pm.
