Mangaluru, Apr 11: Two police personnel of Konaje station here have been suspended for allegedly harassing and insulting a Dalit vendor on the basis of caste.
Konaje sub-inspector Shreekala and head constable Rajesh were suspended on Tuesday April 11 by police commissioner Chandra Sekhar for allegedly subjecting Rukmayya Baira to atrocity and insult.
Rukmayya was arrested on April 6 at Mudipu after police raided his vegetable shop, which is located near a school, on charges of selling ganja and tobacco products.
As per sources, on April 7, Rukmayya allegedly assaulted head constable Rajesh and an FIR was registered against the former the next morning.
Rukmayya was later hospitalised, and as per the complaint filed by him, he was assaulted by the police.
Based on a report furnished by the ACP and on the basis of the complaint, the SI and the head constable were suspended.
