Indian expat in UAE sacked for abusing journalist Rana Ayyub on social media

Dubai, Apr 11 (IANS): A UAE-based company has sacked an Indian employee here for abusing a fellow Indian on the social media and for posting offensive posts against Islam on Facebook, a media report said.

Rana Ayyub, a well-known investigative journalist based in New Delhi, exposed the vulgar messages on Twitter sent to her by the man, following which some of her followers reported the matter to the management of the UAE company where the Indian worked.

The 31-year-old employee from Kerala was identified as B.B. He joined Alpha Paint in Dubai, a sister company of National Paints in Sharjah, in 2015, the Gulf News reported on Monday.

Ayyub posted a screenshot of the message one day last week, saying: "Just a sample of the filth I receive on my Facebook page. Time to name and shame this pervert."

Under the United Arab Emirates (UAE) cybercrime law, any form of misuse of a computer, smart device or an electronic network could fetch the violator, if found guilty, a lengthy jail term and/or a heavy fine.

Rana Ayyub

The company said it terminated the expat's contract and will pay for his tickets and his rights according to the UAE labour law.

The man's visa was cancelled on Monday and he was set to be deported, said the daily.

Ayyub told Gulf News that she will be filing a police case against the accused in New Delhi.

I want to clarify that, I don't have any sympathy for the man who lost his job and was deported back to India because of his tweet.

what I want to know is that why do women require special protection on the web? The abuse she received is nothing special. Guys also receive threats. If FIRs are filed for each any every incident of online abuse our courts will have millions of new cases filed.

If women feel they are soo threatened online then they should close their accounts. Going by Rana`s twitter it seems she has done some reporting against the Right. But what she has to realize is that posting such things is going to attract some minority of the right supporters who just can't let some things go. But what I want to say is that the abuse she received is not because that she is a woman, if a man would have posted on his twitter what Rana had posted even he would have to deal with such abuse.

FACEBOOK, TWITTER, and any other social media were introduced in the west, where the freedom of speech and expression is well respected as a right for every human. When these social media platforms are used in third world countries all the issue arises. Now I want to speak specifically speak about India in this matter. We in India really don't respect others freedoms. On top of that, we react very differently when we hear someone say something offensive. The only thing that would satisfy us is not only shut down his/her speech,.... but also to beat them up or worse kill them. This type of uncivilized behavior cannot be compatible with social media and this is where we are facing such issue.

In a speech to the Rajya Sabha on February 2, Derek O’Brien of the Trinamool Congress accused Modi of encouraging online hatred and harassment through his choice of whom to follow. “Twenty-six Twitter handles that give out rape threats, communal threats, are followed by the prime minister of India,” O’Brien claimed, and two of those accounts, he said, had been suspended by Twitter administrators. “And these Twitter trolls…,” O’Brien added, referring to Modi’s reception for 150 social media influencers in 2015, “They are invited to the prime minister’s house for a nice social-media party.”
There’s no question that a follow from the prime minister is a huge endorsement for a Twitter user and a signal about how Modi wants the right to make its presence felt on social media. (Most users he follows proudly advertise the fact.) Before 2014, the mobilisation of right-wing partisans helped the BJP to undercut and undermine the professional news industry, especially any part of it critical of Modi.
On Twitter, Modi’s party could tack strategically between aggressive Hindutva and a more inclusive platform. His devoted online network got their cues directly from him and other leaders. Think of General V.K. Singh, a minister of state, launching the word ‘presstitute’: now the preferred weapon for attacking professional journalists.
The German Justice Ministry has introduced a draft law that would impose fines of up to €50 million ($53.2 million) on social media companies that fail to quickly remove hate speech and other illegal content from their platforms. According to the Associated Press, the fines would be imposed whenever Facebook or other web companies do not swiftly remove online threats, hate speech, or slanderous fake news.
PM Modi should learn from Germany. Whereas in Modi's India hatred boasted and rewarded. Delhi BJP spokesperson is one best example.

    SMR,

I disagree with you on punishing the people of social media if they have posted offensive material. Now please tell me who will decide what is offensive and what is not? Who will decide what is a hate speech and what is not? If you want govt to clamp down on hate speech won't it infringe on the right to free speech? Also, who will decide what is a fake news and what is not? And to whom do you want to give this power to? there must be a person to be in charge of this right? who should it be? Probably it will be a BJP guy when they are in power or Congress guy when they are in power? Then good luck with the news regarding scams coming out.

What you are demanding is anti-democratic. It will lead to the end of democracy. You may be willing to sacrifice the rights who be in your own safe bubble where you are never offended, but people like me who like our individual freedoms would be always against people like you. I can't even imagine that you are so naive to give away your individual rights so easily without understanding the consequences of it.

You have given Germany`s example to clamp down on social media and fake news. Aren't they the same country who are currently facing too many problems regarding the immigrants?

A very good action by UAE. These persons who s*** in the same plate in which they eat should be arrested and punished in UAE first and then should be deported. If you have hatred for any religion, you are not supposed to travel to a country where the same religion is in existence. You love Dhirams, but, hate that religion ? Shameless rogues. Now, let him work in Nagpur and taste how he is treated there.

Am i missing some of my UAE friends comments for this articles..? Just imagine.. how many of them may be returning home if Indian Govt takes up same measure?? I guess Mangalore airport will be the most busiest airport in our country..!

Staying in gulf & commenting Indian PM as F*ku or INC Vice President as P***u is easy.. right?

Don't worry ..India or Indian Prime Minister never takes your comment's seriously..! Thatz India for you.. ! Keep calling our PM or Rahul with your favourite words. BTW I hate those people especially those NRI's who say that, they respect Indian constitution but never respect it in reality. The thumb rule is that, Indian constitution states that, irrespective of what you are, we need to respect our motherland. But irony is that some people are hesitant to even stand for 56 sec for national anthem..!! what a tragedy the nation has to seek!

Finally, What I want to convey is that, please respect the dignity/position of Prime Minister of India, irrespective of individual. May be its Mr Singh or Mr Modi, they were/are representing us (Indian) in International platform. When you mock Indian Prime Minister with some nick names, its you/we (Indian) who gets mocked and not the PM.

I would agree with you partially. Every person who becomes PM does not gets his sins washed away. Just imagine if Osama had revoked terrorism and fought elections in Pak, he would have even become PM of Pak. So would India roll out the red carpet for him on a state visit?
In Indian constitution we have a right to dissent albeit in a proper way. I concur with you that we should not use expletives towards anyone. Dont forget Americans had protested Trumps victory by holding placards " Not my President". This is democracy and this is what the right of every citizen.
