Assisted by legal loopholes, drug menace spreading fast in Puttur

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Apr 11: The increasing number of drugs abuse cases involving students in the town is strengthening the notion that the drugs mafia has been entrenched strongly in the town. As per an estimate, hundreds of students have fallen prey to this vice.

It may be recalled that a few days back, police personnel had taken into custody several students who were found to be behaving strangely at a birt day party after consuming ganja. In an incident last year, a person found to be selling ganja was nabbed by students and handed over to the police. There were over a dozen cases in which ganja traffickers were found to be active in the town and rural areas.

It appears that the accused are not too much bothered about problems created to them by law as they know that they can get bail easily. At the same time, the departments concerned including police and narcotics bureau have failed to find out the source of ganja supply and nail the criminals. As a result, intoxicants continue to be freely available and many teenagers including some who woud otherwise have a very bright future, go wayward instead of finding success in their lives. Even now the police department does not seem to have taken this menace with the seriousness it deserves, the people in general and many parents believe.

Some sources claim that dealing in drugs goes on near the main stand, and old school building at Nellikatte. It is said that drugs are sold at specified spots on particular days of the week at centres frequented by students like unauthoricsed paying guest accommodations, schools and college surroundings, etc. Cigarette butts and intoxicants were recently found inside the old school building at Nellikatte that is about to crash. As this building is deserted, it can be easily used by criminal elements at night, and the people had demanded for police patrolling around this building at night.

stop bringing politics in every problem these are social issues concerning every citizen, every parent, every child. If you depend on politicians and copy no problem will be solved.
first of all educate child what consumption of drugs leads to. initially addiction is fun but later on it ruins life and most times even death. Adults should keep watch on their children better late than never.

    Sir,
Kids, who take a sip from Father's beer mug at dinner time, tend to grow into responsible drinkers.
Kids who are restricted throughout, will go and drink as much as possible at the first chance and most of them become drunkards.

Hope you understand why I am for legalization of cannabis.

    Benifits of legalization of Marijuana(cannabis)

    1. It will eliminate illegal trade and associated crimes.Marijuana legalization (or decriminalization) will replace the black market production and distribution with an 'overboard industry'. There will be rules and regulations but the trade will be 'populated by the government, farmers, merchants and retails clerks, not by criminals or drug dealers'.

    2. Marijuana addiction is rare. An epidemiological study showed that only 9 percent of those who use marijuana end up being clinically dependent on it. The 'comparable rates' for tobacco, alcohol and cocaine stood at 32 percent, 15 percent and 16 percent respectively.

    3. Taxing marijuana will increase government's revenue. In an open letter to US President George Bush, around 500 economists, led by Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman, called for marijuana to be "legal but taxed and regulated like other goods".

    4. It will create job opportunities. Legalization of marijuana for recreational and medical purposes in Colorado has created 10,000 new jobs in the area. There are a plethora of jobs that can be created by the marijuana industry and help reduce India's unemployment rate.

    5. Marijuana use has medical benefits. Studies have shown that marijuana use has dozens of medical benefits.

    6. It will help the locals. In states like Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where cannabis plants grow, marijuana is the only source of income for many locals.

    7. Legalization will ensure that good quality marijuana is sold to the consumers.

    8. Marijuana has limited withdrawal symptoms and its use can't be fatal.

    9. Prohibition has failed to control the use and domestic production of marijuana.

    10. Marijuana is less harmful than alcohol.

I have told thousand times that unless medical blood test in the school and education institutions, we can not control the students. About 80% we can control in the beginning stage only. But educational institutions are not supporting this because , if the blood test is in the school means poor admission and difficult to run school. For present trend school administration is responsible.

    simboy,

When you dont know anything about cannabis(ganja) why do you comment? Alcohol and cigarettes are more harmful than cannabis. why dont you first ask those to be banned?

It might be just ganja now, the abuse is on its nascent stage, later it will take the shape in form of heroine, cocaine and what not... We should not wait till our coming generation is fully consumed by so called substance abuse.
We along with the authority should work towards the eradication of the drug menace or we will one day become punjab, where in you will find an drug addict in each and every house.
We have to protect the future of Mangalore.

Cannabis was used in india for thousands of years. It was banned only after US put cannabis in the drug catagory. Now when cannabis is being legalised in many of the states in US,.... India must lift the ban on cannabis.

'' intoxicants continue to be freely available and many teenagers including some who woud otherwise have a very bright future, go wayward instead of finding success in their lives.''

Who said this?? Its completely inaccurate. If cannabis is freely available, how do suppliers earn money out of it? Now teenagers also get into habit of smoking, alcohol so why aren't these banned.

    I agree with you.
when you do not get something without any restrictions, you tend to consume more when you get it in a shady way.
If Ganja was available in free market, people would have consumed occasionally in a controlled manner.
And more over, cannabis or ganja or bhang is less addictive than alcohol and nicotine.

Government should seriously think of legalizing the sale and consumption of cannabis.
