Karwar, Apr 7: Amazon, a consumer goods conglomerate, has been imposed with a fine of Rs 11,500 by the district consumer court here. It has held the concern guilty of failing to supply the goods to a customer after obtaining advance payment towards supply of a mobile phone.
Amazon had published in its website that it would be supplying Cool pad note 3 mobile priced at Rs 7,500 at Rs 5,599. Achut Kumar from the town, who went through the ad on July 20, 2016, placed an order for the mobile phone online. He also paid the stated sum. Although the company conveyed to him that he would get the cellphone before August 2, the phone was never supplied. Even after he drew the attention of the company, he did not get response. Later, it is said that the company even refused to return the money. Calls made to customer care centre of the company went futile as the staff gave evasive replies.
Achut thereafter filed a complaint in the district consumer grievances redressal forum seeking compensation of Rs 59,000. President of the forum, Sunanda Durge, and member, Raju Metri, who heard the case, ordered Amazon to pay a total sum of Rs 11,500 to the complainant within a month. The fine imposed comprises Rs 5,500 towards cellphone cost, Rs 3,000 for deficiency in service, and Rs 3,000 for court costs incurred by the complainant.
