Mangaluru, Apr 6: Assistant sub-inspector of Urwa police station here, Aithappa, who suffered serious injuries to his head after two unidentified motor bike-borne men attacked him with a rod near Ladyhill Circle in the city when he was on duty there at around 3.30 am on Wednesday April 5, is being treated at a private hospital in the city.
It is gathered that two motor bike-born youth were following the ASI, who was on his rounds and was slowly moving in his motor bike from Lalbagh towards Ladyhill. The ASI, who observed them, slowed down his vehicle further and stopped the vehicle when the bikers came closer.
When the ASI stopped the motor bike, the people also stopped their bike by his side and questioned in Tulu as to which station he belongs to. When Aithappa said he was from Urwa station, the pillion rider asked him where he was going. The bike rider told the pillion rider to strike (Adila), at which he hit the head of the ASI with an iron rod he was holding. When Aithappa fell down, both the bike-born people fled.
It is learnt that the people who followed the ASI were not wearing helmets, but their faces were masked. As Aithappa was wearing helmet, his helmet was damaged in the incident, and his head suffered injury.
City police commissioner, M Chandra Sekhar, as well as deputy police commissioners, K M Shantaraju and Dr Sanjeev Patil visited the spot and also the hospital where the ASI is being treated. DCP, Sanjeev Patil, said that Aithappa is out of danger and his condition is improving. The police have formed three teams, which are being guided by assistant commissioner of police, Uday Naik, to investigate the case.
The police commissioner has exuded confidence of arresting the accused soon. He said that this murder attempt is being investigated from all angles.
Retaliation?
Some police sources said that the attack on the ASI looks like a retaliation for the lathi charge done of Popular Front of India (PFI) activists on Tuesday during a protest. It is remembered that arrested persons were taken to Urwa police station after arrests and investigations were conducted at Urwa police station.
