Mangaluru, Apr 5: In a proud moment for the city, 6-year-old chess prodigy Shriyana Mallya emerged winner at the Karnataka State Under-7 Chess Championship 2017 held at Hotel City Centaur International in Bengaluru from April 2 to 4.
As many as 49 children took part in the chess championship jointly organised by Bangalore Rural District Chess Association and United Karnataka Chess Association.
The young star displayed a clinical precision and cleared all eight rounds securing 8 points. Shriyana beat Medha Prashanth and Pranjal D from Bengaluru in the first two rounds, and Saanvi M A from Mysuru and Tanishka Jain from Mandya in the third and fourth rounds respectively. She then put up an impressive show against Jesslyn Jinisha from Bengaluru and Shraavani Naik from Dharwad in the fifth and sixth round. Shriyana beat Bhoomika Singh and Sri Harini from Bengaluru in the seventh and eight round respectively to emerge winner in the U-7 category.
With this outstanding performance, Shriyana has qualified to represent Karnataka in the National Level Under-7 Girls Chess Championship which will be held in Andhra Pradesh in September later this year.
She will also represent India in the World and Asian School Chess Championships to be held in Romania from April 21 to May 1, and again in China in July this year.
Daughter of Sandeep and Nandini Mallya, Shriyana is a second standard student of Lourdes Central School and a trainee of the much-acclaimed academy, Derik's Chess School.
