Bengaluru: New state sand policy to incorporate demands of coastal districts

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (RJP)

Bengaluru, Apr 5: State law minister T B Jayachandra on Tuesday April 5, said that the state government will come out with a new sand policy which will incorporate the demands of the three coastal districts to allow locals to extract sand.

Speaking to reporters here, Jayachandra said that the people of three coastal districts namely Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada, have been demanding that they should get sand at cheaper rates. “They also demand that, only after meeting the local needs, sand should be transported to other districts,” he said.

“These demands and other aspects will be taken up at the next state Cabinet meeting before finalising the new policy,” he added.

Sand from other states

Jayachandra said the government is also contemplating to buy sand from other states in the wake of its severe shortage in the state. “Maharashtra has been importing sand from other states,” he pointed out.

Attack on DC and AC

Jayachandra said, a Cabinet sub-committee on Tuesday discussed the attack on Udupi deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis and assistant commissioner Shilpa Nag by a gang which was involved in illegal sand mining.

Panel on tame media

Speaking on Speaker K B Koliwad constituting a Joint House Committee to rein in the media, Jayachandra said “It is a decision of the House. The government had no discussion with the Speaker in this regard and we, as government, do not have anything to do with that decision.”

The whole sand mining issue just shows how stupid the authorities are. If they want sand mining to stop let them not issue permission for construction in twin districts.

Just imagine, steel is widely used in construction. but what if procuring steel was illegal or illegal after certain quantity. Now why would the respective authorities give permission for construction of building when they know that they would definitely require larger quantities.

If the authorities any common sense left in them let them not issue permits for construction.

    @SRI, Karkala,

You are RIGHT ! Some are LEFT !

How Sand will come there to the same size ? Erosion of earth in a rapid rate due to the cutting of trees and excavation of the Land before Rainy season is the reason of Sand filling in rivers.

Something should be done to protect erosion otherwise our future generation has to see a burden land.

Sand can be removed but there should be some balance. It is not the property of some people who are capable of collecting. There should be some procedure so that the benefit of sand resource should be shared. It is also necessary to remove sand in a scientific manner without disturbing the river beds, shores, Bridges or the people living near rivers and dependent upon rivers.

Like sands, we also have Stone quarries in our area. Now such a big quarry became huge ponds that collect water in rainy season and pose danger to children and cattle.
Now we have to tell our kids that THERE WAS A HUGE STONE ROCK HERE. Govt policies were there earlier also. But ROCKS disappeared.

ACs and DCs earlier enjoyed in city were getting the taste of muscle power of Sand Business Men.

Let us see how the story unfolds....

    Dear Law Minister,
As long as you delay the decision on sand mining , it is good for the local politicians. There is no able political leader in DK who can plead with the CM for our rights. The poor people of DK are paying Rs. 7,000/- to 9,000/- per load of sand. The Cement block and Interlock manufacturing units on the edge of closing.

Limited time left for you to decide...................

If you try to do new state sand policy do it fast and and not after one year when D.C's AC', SI's, Tahsildars, Village accountants are attacked and admitted in ICU.

Punish the attackers first who tried to assualt the Govt. Officers. You should also stop such illegal sand mining activities and also arrest the KINGPIN of this sand smuggling gang.
