Mangaluru, Mar 31: Toll charges at National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) at Suratkal and Brahmarakootlu near Bantwal have been upwardly revised with effect from April 1. The news of hike has come at a time when people are fighting against these gates and demanding to dismantle them.
The new rates at NITK tollgate for light vehicles like cars, jeeps, vans and other light vehicles will be Rs 50 for one way travel and Rs 70 for two-way travel as against earlier charges of Rs 45 and 70 respectively. Monthly charges for 50 trips have been hiked to Rs 1,600 from previous Rs 1,535. For commercial vehicles registered in the district, the fee will be Rs 25.

For light commercial vehicles, light goods vehicles and mini buses, one way travel will henceforth cost Rs 80 in place of 75. For two-way journey, these vehicles have to pay Rs 115 instead of 110. Monthly passes for them will cost Rs 2,585 instead of 2,435. Commercial vehicles registered in district will pay Rs 40 as toll charges.
Buses and trucks with two a axles will have to pay Rs 165 in place of 155 for one-way travel. For two-way travel the same day, charges have been hiked from Rs 235 to 245. Three-axle commercial vehicles will pay Rs 175 in place of 170. For two-way journey on same day, charges will be Rs 265 instead of 255. Monthly passes for the vehicles will cost Rs 5,670 in place of 5,915.
Likewise, charges for earth moving equipment, huge construction machines etc have also been raised.
Brahmarakootlu
Cars, jeeps, vans and light motor vehicles will henceforth cough up Rs 25 for one-way travel in place of 20, while two-way travel will cost the same Rs 35. Monthly passes for 50 trips will cost Rs 770 instead of 735. There has been no charge in light commercial vehicle, light goods vehicles, mini buses etc. Monthly pass however has become costly at Rs 1,240 in place of Rs 1,190.
Buses or trucks will pay Rs 80 instead of 75 for one-way travel. Monthly passes will cost Rs 2,600 instead of 2,495. Three axle commercial vehicles will pay Rs 85 in place of 80 for one-way travel and 130 for two-way journey. Charges for huge vehicles, machinery etc also has moved upward.
National Highways Authority says that for people living within a radius of 20 km from these toll plazas, monthly pass at Rs 245 (previously 235) are available for non-commercial vehicles. In case of commercial vehicles other than national permit vehicles registered in the district will get 50 percent concession, it added.
