Mangaluru : Water crisis in district to be tackled efficiently - Ivan D'Souza

Daijiworld Media Network- Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru Mar 30: "Dakshina Kannada district faces acute shortage of water, and certain precautionary measures have been taken to tackle water crisis in the district," said chief whip of legislative council Ivan D'Souza, addressing the media on here on Thursday, March 30.

"Even during the recently concluded assembly session in Bengaluru water problems have been prioritized. Orders have been passed to concerned officials to deal with the water crisis,"  he said.

Ivan further said, "For the first time in history, Mangaluru and Bantwal taluks in Dakshina Kannada district were listed among the 160 drought-hit taluks in the state. Rs 13 crore has been allotted for drought-hit areas and Rs 3 crore has been sanctioned so far. Water level at Thumbay is 4.7 meter and is sufficient for 30 days. The water level at AMR dam is 18m. Earlier,  15 MGD of water was allotted for industrial purposes. But due to the water crisis, it has been cut down to 10."

At present 60 borewells are functional. The government has also sanctioned the digging up of additional borewells for a provision of water to the public. Nearly 34 borewell points have been identified. Out of them, work on 24 borewells is in progress. There are 5,868 borewells in the entire district in which 5168 borewells are situated in rural areas, and remaining 700 borewells are situated in urban areas. There are 1,568 vented dams in the district, out of which 427 need to be repaired, and the government has sanctioned 2.32 crores to repair such vented dams," he added.

When asked about Bondel and Kadri pipe burst, Ivan said, "It was not brought to my notice. It should not have happened during this water crisis."

Meanwhile, Ivan D Souza distributed cheques to 23 beneficiaries, worth Rs 13,57,737 totally from the chief minister's fund.

Shameless politicians. During this acute water crisis too, they are silent on Yettinahole River Diversion Scheme. Water is diverted from a water scarce district to another parched district. Desalination plant and tank water for Mangaloreans. Why Ivan D'Souza is silent on Nethravathi River Diversion Scheme? Why he is reluctant to talk on behalf of his brothers and motherland? Speak-up for your people and they will ensure you are re-elected with double majority or even without opposition. After all, you require this coveted position and we will ensure it. But stand on your spine to talk fearless and save our water sources....! Are you ready to be with us in our struggle?

One of the very humorous, but sensible Whatsapp forward doing the rounds presently is:

    * 42 degrees+ temperature in many places.... some one wrote to Sun.....
    Dear Sun,
    Please go to
    settings~display~brightness and
lower your brightness! Please, its too hot to handle!

    * Sun's reply...
I have not changed any settings.
Please go to your settings and...

    1. Increase number of trees...
    2. Reduce carbon emission levels...
    3. Reduce concrete jungles...
    4. Increase number of lakes...

    Basically, switch to
    "Human Mode"
    from auto mode...!!!

Well, it sounds so simple, and the list of solutions to the problem of global warming/water-shortage/pollution etc. could go on and on, but are rather unpleasant, for our greedy/indifferent humankind to implement.

Hence, where do we go from here???

Unfortunately the authorities did nothing to prevent this problem except rationing water this year. With full respect to Mr Dsouza and others in the bureaucracy, we need to tackle this VERY SERIOUS problem in 2 ways:-

    1) Build more water storage/dams across the district- borewells will reduce the ground water levels and deplete the water table further. It will cause more problems and not a solution.

    2) Make rain water harvesting MANDATORY for every new construction. Do NOT give COMPLETION Certificates unless these buildings have Rain water harvesting. Educate and encourage people to conserve water.

    3) Over a period of time, change the old pipes and build efficient water monitoring systems.

MANGALORE first needs uninterrupted WATER and ELECTRICITY before it can aspire to be a SMART City. Wake up call for the people in power.....

Every year millions of gallons of rain water goes down the drain during monsoon and no political party has ever thought of any plans to store the same by way of construction of proper dams. It might be a Herculean task at present as it might hamper the agricultural land and many dwelling places. Instead of constructing one dam, there can be number of smaller dams. This would help to restore sufficient water which otherwise would go down to Arabian Sea. Certainly farmers will be more happy to have water for the cultivation as well as for the potable purpose too, throughout the year. This should be planned judiciously so that there is no negative impact on public property and the environment. Kudremukh Iron Ore project had constructed a dam for the supply of ore to Mangalore sea port which was a successful one. Had no problem throughout the supply for many many years. A similar way can be sought for our coastal area.

Revive old water tanks and open wells. Remove encroachments of these tanks and wells. Also make rain water harvesting compulsory for high rise buildings in Dakshina Kannada district. Also make provision for open spaces/ parks in every residential layout or area so that atleast some amount of rain water percolates to earth during rains. This will help in maintaining level of water table which has gone very low in the South Kanara district.

Drilling bore wells is not the solution, its rather will add to the problem in long term. Due to the lost paddy fields /farms and ponds and loss of open ground spaces etc., the natural replenishment process of ground water table during the rainy season was lost.
What is needed is: Natural reinstatement or recharging of ground water table by digging ponds in every communities for the collection of rain water ( off course these ponds need protection from encroachments etc., ).
Unfortunately all our leaders or those in power are talk about temporary solutions not long term solutions. Therefore, to have a real solution we general public should seriously participate in the process.

KINDLY REPAIR THE LEAKING DRAINAGE SYSTEM IN THE CITY. HUNDREDS OF SWEET WATER WELL ARE POLUTED AND UNDERGROUND WATER LEVEL GOT SPOILED. STILL WE ARE TALKING ABOUT BORE WELL PLANING. AS YOU KNOW A BORE WELL CAN SUCK THE WATER ALMOST AROUND A MILE RADIUS.

ALL THE ROAD SIDE CANALS / THODU WERE CONVERTED IN TO CONCRETE CANALS SO ALL THE RAIN WATER IS DIRECTLY GOING TO THE SEA. AND PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT WATER HARVESTING.

OLD CANALS WERE BUILT BY RED STONE WHICH WERE VERY GOOD FOR WATER HARVETING.

PLEASE TAKE AN CORRECT. OPINION WHILE IMPLIMENTING ANY PLAN TO MAKE OUR MANGALORE A SMART CITY

Each authority giving varied statements, which is confusing n irritating; appears left hand doesn't know what the right is doing!!

Unless they come up with a concrete long term solution, application of "fewikwik" type solutions, to fool the public, is of no use!

Water table, in Karnataka, has gone down drastically as per a govt report published in DH recently, which they attribute to indiscriminate drilling of bores! Going deeper than 300 feet the water is contaminated with high levels of arsenic n fluoride, which is very toxic to humans! Situation now is it is very rare to find water at less than 300 feet!! Drilling of indiscriminate bores is a temp solution with a long term serious problem, which will have no solution then as entire areas will go DRY!!

In such a situation, the creator is our only help!!

    Jai Mangluru!!

Mr. C.T. Thomas, Unlike Kateel who had peoples mandate, Ivan was appointed by Siddaramiaah with some position in Cong to appease a certain community. If Ivan contests an election as a Cong candidate he will meet the same fate of Jannannna.

This is not a plan !!!Borewell is not the option . what is your long term solution ??

how much water is required fo next 25 years and what do u need to sustain that .

RWH , desalination , additional storage dams , expand existing lakes and improving pipeline to redcue wastegage etc ..so a clear plan is required . You would need to setup a panel of architects , town planners, experts , envirnmentalists etc ...
