Mangaluru, Mar 26: A day after water pipe burst at Bondel in the city, it was the turn of another pipe, this time in Kadri, to meet the same fate, again resulting in waste of several hundred litres of water amid scorching, parched summer.
However, unlike the Bondel water pipe that was repaired the same day after a report was published on daijiworld, the corporator in this case said that as it was Sunday and hence a holiday, the pipe could not be repaired.
A ruptured water pipe at Kadri has caused hundreds of litres of water go waste for more than half a day. The water that was seen cascading down the pavement into the drainage and beyond has been flowing since the morning of Sunday March 26. Unfortunately, it has not been repaired yet.
Despite repeated calls, none of the officials or workers from MCC have turned up to address the isse.
When daijiworld correspondent contacted Kadri corporator Ashok in the morning about the water leaking onto the pavement from a possibly cracked water pipe, he acknowledged the problem.
On enquiring again, hours later, about the breached water pipe that was left unattended for more than half a day, the corporator said, "I called the persons concerned to fix the pipe. But it's Sunday. They're on their weekly off. The water issue cannot be addressed today.
"Yes, the water will keep flowing for the whole day today. They will come for repair only tomorrow. I had already spoken about the issue of breach of water pipe at the meeting on Friday," he said.
It may be recalled that on Saturday March 25, there was pipe burst at Bondel which resulted in several litres of water going waste. As already stressed in these columns, the MCC needs to take concrete measures to ensure the city does not face problems due to pipe bursts, and moreover, repond to calls, especially as the citizens are already reeling under water shortage due to rationing by the MCC.
