Mangaluru, Mar 25: Even as Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has rationed water supply in the tough summer to 48 hours a week, a broken pipe opposite St Lawrence Church, Bondel has been leaking from morning of Saturday, March 25, resulting in hundreds of litres of water going waste.
None of the officials or workers from MCC have turned up even after repeated complaints.
While the city is already reeling under water crisis, it is a shame that MCC officials have failed to readdress the issue and stop the horrendous wastage of water.
Mangaluru is facing acute shortage of water from the past couple of years. For the first time in history, Mangaluru and Bantwal taluks in Dakshina Kannada district were listed among the 160 drought-hit taluks in the state. People in Mangaluru are facing tough times after MCC decided to stall water for 48 hours every week. The water level in AMR dam Thumbay dam is 6.25m and 4.15m which can be used for 40 and 20 days respectively, as per the mayor.
Indeed, it is disheartening to see litres and litres of water being wasted when the entire city is facing water woes. It may be recalled that last year, the city faced water crisis after a huge pipe burst at Adyar. With water levels in dams already low, the MCC needs to take concrete measures to ensure the city does not have to carry additional burden of crisis due to pipe bursts.
