Udupi, March 23: A police constable hunted down two thieves fleeing after snatching a gold chain from the neck of a woman. The operation incidentally helped the police department solve four cases of chain snatching worth Rs two lac altogether.
Cases of robbery of gold chain worth Rs 60 thousand from the neck of S Acharya at Sasthan on January 4 this year, gold chain belonging to Gulabi Shedthy also worth Rs 60 thousand in Kota on March 3 this year, gold chain of Manasa on October 21 in 2016 and the recent gold chain theft at Saligrama on March 21, were solved with the arrest.
SP commended Pradeep for having plucked up the courage to catch the suspects and announced a reward to him. Brahmavar Police Circle Inspector also awarded him a prize of Rs 10,000. The entire police force received laurels because of the daring constable Pradeep.
The chase
Mahukar Kharvi and Nagesh Kharvi were the suspects arrested by constable Pradeep Nayak (35) who is from Kota police station. Pradeep was patrolling Kota-Saligrama on the night of March 21 when he was alerted by screams of a woman. He saw two suspects fleeing the spot on a bike with the snatched gold chain and chased them on his bike. He also informed Brahmavar Inspector Srikanth about it when he reached Barkur Kalikamba Temple. He gathered people at Saibarkatte with some help there. He then overtook the suspect’s bike near Kalikamba Temple. Pradeep threatened to kick the suspects' bike if they did not stop. Aware of his identity the two tried speeding up. Pradeep kicked their bike which then fell over. Madhukar fell unconscious but Nagesh tried to escape but was asked to stay put, until people gathered. Pradeep enquired about the absence of number plate on the bike and assured to let him go on checking the documents."
Pradeep took the suspects to the police as people gathered and registered a case of gold chain theft. Questioning of the suspects revealed that they are involved in four cases of chain snatching.
