Mangaluru, Mar 22: World Water Day is an annual event celebrated on March 22, starting from the year 1993. The day focuses attention on the importance of universal access to clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities in developing countries. The day also focuses on advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
World Water Day was organised by the department of civil engineering of Srinivas School of Engineering, Mukka in association with Mangaluru city police, guided by comissioner Chandra Sekhar on Wednesday March 22. In order to mark the celebration, the department of civil engineering distributed pamphlets to the public to create awareness on saving water, effective utilisation of water, protection of water bodies and Implementation of rain water harvesting. The students also collected signatures from the public at State Bank circle, Mangaluru City Corporation, Lalbagh and Suratkal bus stand.
Kavita Sanil, mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation, Valentine D’Souza, assistant commissioner of police, Mangaluru, Walter Nandalike, founder of Daijiworld Media Group, former mayors, corporators, officials, social leaders and school children joined with public in the noble cause of public awareness campaign to save water. As the people of Mangaluru realized the problem with supply of drinking water in the summer last year, more than 9,000 people responded positively and appreciated the campaign organised by the college. The public interacted with the students on how to save water and to create further awareness in the society.
World Water Day is supported by stakeholders across the globe. Many organizations promote clean water for people and sustainable aquatic habitats. Events such as road march, technical seminars and talks by experts, collage and slogan competitions for the students were held at the college to celebrate World Water Day. In addition to this, it was decided to celebrate WWD with the involvement of public and to create awareness on water issues. In future, similar events with social causes will be organised by the department of civil engineering in the interest of the society.
