Udupi, Mar 11: Unidentified three thieves tried to break open an ATM machine at Hebri near here on the early morning of Friday, March 10.
The incident took place in an ATM centre belonging to a nationalized bank on Brahmavar Road at Hebri.
Three thieves came in a car at 4.20 am in the morning and two of them entered the ATM. Then they closed the shutters and started breaking the ATM machine. But as the siren was heard at that time, they were dissuaded from continuing for a while. Then they cut the wire connecting to the siren and continued their work.
One of the thieves standing outside was coordinating with the two thieves inside the ATM centre. When more people started to gather on the road slowly, the thieves realised that they would be caught and sped in the car.
CCTV recording
CCTV cameras installed outside and inside the ATM centre have captured the images of the thieves and their movements. There was no security guard posted at the ATM. Sources in the bank said that appointment of security guards was stopped some time back.
A case stands registered at Hebri police station. The phone calls made by the thieves will help in nabbing the culprits, police said. They have already begun the investigation.
It is said that all the three thieves were wearing masks.
