Leipzig drop points at Augsburg in German Bundesliga

Berlin, Mar 4 (IANS): German football club RB Leipzig were held 2-2 by FC Augsburg in a hard fought Bundesliga clash here.

Leipzig -- the runners-up last season -- tried to stage a comeback after conceeding first, but were unable to protect their 2-1 lead as Augsburg's Martin Hinteregger secured the draw at their home ground here on Friday evening, reports Xinhua news agency.

Leipzig remain at the second place of the German top division standings with 49 points from 23 matches while Augsburg climbed to the 12th position with 28 points.

In an evenly balanced game, it were yet the hosts who broke the deadlock 19 minutes into the game when Konstantinos Stafylidis unleashed a powerful shot from 30 meters to drill the ball into the far corner.

Leipzig responded just six minutes later as Timo Werner capitalised on a through ball from Naby Keita to beat onrushing Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz and find the bottom left corner.

The visitors bounced back after the restart when Marwin Compper nodded in a corner from Emil Forsberg to the far post to hand Leipzig a 2-1 lead 52 minutes into the game.

Augsburg shook off the setback and answered with another goal after Martin Hinteregger completed a counter attack, that started at the host's own penalty box in the 59th minute.

Leipzig increased the pressure in an effort to find the winner but their efforts remained fruitless whereas Augsburg almost snatched the decider through Stafylidis, who rattled the outside of the box in the dying minutes.

"I am okay with the draw although we came from behind and turned the tides. We did not make the most of our chances but I am not disappointed by my team's performance," Leipzig head coach Ralph Hasenhuettl said.
