Mangaluru: NMPT conducts oil spill mock drill at SPM

Media Release

Mangaluru, Mar 1: New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) along with MRPL successfully conducted an oil spill mock drill at SPM (single point mooring) in association with all stake-holders on February 24.

500 metres of inflatable booms were laid out encircling the SPM. A disk type skimmer which is normally used to skim the oil from water was also used. Representatives from NMPT, MRPL, district disaster management, coast guard and IOCL left NMPT harbour at 7.00 am by tug Bhuvana and returned in the afternoon after conducting the drill. The scenario for the drill was pipeline leakage from SPM.

Single point mooring (SPM) is a floating buoy for handling crude oil from very large tankers located at a distance of 17 kms away from the berths for import of crude oil for MRPL.

NMPT and MRPL are now fully prepared to meet eventualities like oil pollution within NMPT waters.
