Bengaluru, Feb 27 (DHNS): Annamma R, who runs the BBMP?dry waste collection centre at Kamakshipalya, has become the first woman wastepicker in the city to get her own vehicle for door-to-door collection of dry waste. She got a light goods truck for the purpose on Sunday.
A member of Hasiru Dala organisation, 38-year-old Annamma got the vehicle with the help of S3IDF, an international nonprofit organisation. She also spent her savings to purchase the vehicle which cost Rs one lakh. She will now use the vehicle for waste collection in Kamakshipalya ward.
“I noticed that trolleys used by wastepickers in my ward were unable to accommodate more quantity of dry waste at times as wet waste was also filled in these vehicles. Hence, I thought of purchasing a truck that could be used for collecting dry waste only,” she said. Annamma has now decided to learn driving.
A resident of Ullal, Annamma has been picking waste since her childhood. She says that she chose the profession since she had to take care of her siblings.
“We are thankful to the Palike for recognising wastepickers’ efforts. The BBMP will award her a four-month contract for door-to- door waste collection” said Nalini Shekar, co-founder of Hasiru Dala.
