Udupi, Feb 22: Varadaraja Nayak (44), a flower vendor from Kaup, and a well-known social worker, passed away at a hospital on the night of Monday February 20. He had tried to commit suicide on February 18 morning because of mounting liabilities.
Nayak was a resident of Uliyar in Majoor village. He had been found lying in a critical state at the Karandady school ground on February 18 morning. The locals had admitted him into a private hospital in the city. He is survived by wife and mother. It is said that Nayak was depressed at the fact that he did not have any children even after leading several years of married life.
Varadaraja Nayak was known in Kaup and surrounding areas for his ability to do different kinds of flower decorations for functions and programmes. He was active with various social service organisations and was popular for his altruist nature. However, he had raised loans from various sources for his business and was unable to repay either the interest or principal. It is felt that he would have resorted to end his life on account of heavy loans.
