Shivamogga, Feb 8: Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College here, which had turned into a centre of dispute over dress code, conducted classes on Tuesday February 7 under the watchful eyes of police personnel. A number of students attended classes, duly wearing saffron shawls and burqas.
While most of the students were seen sticking to the dress code, some students including girls sported saffron shawls. The situation is so fragile that neither the college management nor the police are able to strictly tell the students not to wear them.
The policemen allowed only the students and teaching staff of the college inside the premises after checking their identity cards. With the prompt action of the police, the risk of the issue spreading to other colleges was averted. Deputy superintendent of police, Manjunath Shetty, has been overseeing the arrangements at Sahyadri College. Barricades have been set up and vehicles moving on the route from Hole bus stand to Sahyadri College are being checked by the police. Students not wearing helmets were given strict instructions to wear them from the next day onward.
