Mangaluru, Jan 26: A four-day fruit and flower show organised by department of horticulture, DK district administration and Siri Horticulture Association was inaugurated by minister for forest, ecology and environment and district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai at Kadri Park here on Thursday January 26.
Speaking on the occasion, Ramanath Rai said, "The department of horticulture has taken a good inititaive of organising this flower show. This would encourage people to show concern towards environment and also help the department in earning revenue. This event is orgainsed every year".
"The departments of horticulture, agriculture and forest are coming up with different programmes to encourage green initiatives. Tannirbhavi Park is one of them. The government will encourage and support programmes like planting saplings in the city which will benefit the environment," he added.
The exhibition which display varieties of flowers and fruits will be open to public. Students entry fee will be Rs 10 and adults will be charged Rs 20. Students coming in school uniform, physically challenged and elderly people will not be charged any entry fees.
The replica of Rani Abbaka, the warrior queen of Ullal, made out of exotic and local flowers including roses and chrysanthemums is the special attraction of this exhibition.
Flowers like marigold, anthuriam, dahila, jarbera, orchids and other bonsai plants are being displayed at the exhibition. A flower arrangement competetion will also be held in which the general public is free to participate. Nearly 80 stalls are put up out of which 10 stalls are from the government giving information on various schemes to the people. The stalls are selling horticultural and organic products besides the nurseries selling plants. Food festival "Aharamela" will be organised during the exhibition.
