Bengaluru: Rahul Dravid declines honorary doctorate, says he will earn it

Daijiworld Media Network-Bengaluru (RJP)

Bengaluru, Jan 26: Always a gentleman on and off the field, former cricketer Rahul Dravid on Wednesday January 25, declined an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University saying that he would like to study, write thesis and then earn the doctorate.

The Bangalore University decided to honour Dravid at their 52nd Annual Convocation ceremony on January 27. However, Dravid declined the offer.

Dravid, in a statement, said “I would like to try to earn a Doctorate Degree by accomplishing some form of academic research in the field of sports rather than receiving an honorary degree.”

Bangalore University in a press release mentioned that the cricketer declined to accept the honorary degree.

Dravid, a proud Bengalurean, was born in Indore. He spent his childhood in Bengaluru and studied at St Joseph’s Boys High School in city. He later completed graduation at St Joseph’s College of Commerce and even enrolled for MBA at St Joseph’s College of Business Administration when he was selected for the Indian cricket team.

Dravid retired from international cricket in 2012 after representing India for 16 years in the sport. He made his debut back in 1996. He is currently the coach of the Indian U-19 team.

This is not the first time he has declined a honorary degree. He once refused a doctorate from the Gulbarga University.

Rahul Dravid is not only a gentleman of a gentlemen's game....he is also simplicity personified . Technically a perfect batsman and a role model to many. He did the right thing. A degree like a doctorate should be earned ....not bestowed upon. Well done Dravid. You will remain in the hearts of millions not only because you were a great cricketer but also because you are a thorough gentleman.

What a noble gesture, kudos to Shri Dravidji, a proud KANNADIGA. a big slap on FEKUISM.

What an irony. without prejudice, the fact is that we have one more prominent businessman awarded Doctorate (Shri Malyaji) is now in UK for all the reason the country is not happy about.

Mr.Dravid really deserves more respect than many other politicians who have accepted doctorates for not very significant service to the society. The good upbringing and moral education received from St.Joseph's Bangalore is highly reflected in his nature and gesture. Hats off to you Sir!!

A WISE GESTURE FROM MR. DRAVID.

WHEN POLITICIANS AND OTHERS WHO ARE SOMETIMES PRIMARY SCHOOL DROPOUTS RECEIVING DOCTORATES FROM VARIOUS UNIVERSITIES THUS DEGRADING THE VALUE OF SUCH DOCTORATES HERE S ONE WHO DECLINES IT POLITELY AND SAYS HE WANTS TO STUDY FOR IT.

HATS OFF MR. DRAVID, YOU HAVE MADE US PROUD OF OUR HARD EARNED DOCTORATES.

This is the humility of a great man. Words and deeds of wisdom. “I would like to try to earn a Doctorate Degree by accomplishing some form of academic research in the field of sports rather than receiving an honorary degree.”
Rare personalities of a great achiever. Honour and respect his approach. In our great Country, people (money, power) import doctorates even from Sri Lanka.
Hats off to Rahul Dravid, you are a role model indeed
