Mangaluru, Jan 24: Tulunada Rakshana Vedike staged a protest near Mini Vidhana Saudha to revoke the ban on the traditional sport of coastal region Kambala here on Tuesday, January 24.
Addressing the protestors, president of Tulunada Rakshana Vedike Yogesh Shetty Jeppu said, "Jallikattu has claimed so many lives and so has
cricket. It is not right to raise voice against Kambala as farmers are closely attached to the sport. They take care and show concern towards buffaloes by providing proper food and water".
He urged People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to watch and observe Kambala sport before coming to conclusion that it is a cruel sport harming animals. Elephants carry a 750 kilo howdah in the Jumbo Savari during the famous Dasara celebrations in Mysuru. Will PETA ask to ban the Dasara procession claiming cruelty, he questioned.
When PETA can demand ban on a traditional sport, it can even interfere in the consumption of non-veg food in future, he said.
"The State government has given prominence to Kambala by providing Rajyotsava Award and special grants for the sport. We need to set politics aside and raise voices unitedly to revoke the ban on Kambala. People of the district should raise their voice in protecting the traditional sport of Kambala".
Tulunada Rakshana Vedike general secretary Prashanth Bhat Kadaba, members Gerald Towers, Muneer Bava, Anand Amin, Srikanth and others were present.
