Udupi, Jan 18: District-in-charge Pramod Madhwaraj inaugurated the annual sports meet for journalists organised by the Udupi District Working Journalists' Association (UDWJA) with the symbolic release of doves, at Mahatma Gandhi Ground, Ajjarkad, Udupi on Tuesday, January 17.
The sports meet was an excellent opportunity for journalists to showcase their talent despite their usual busy schedule.
Minister Madhwaraj addressing the gathering said, ‘I am glad to participate in this event. During my time as sports minister, I visited 16 districts, of which, Udupi was the one which had the best and dedicated journalists. They are unbiased and straightforward professionals. It is hard to find and enjoy free time for those in this field. Such recreational events keep the mind healthy and the body sound."
The minister presented Rs 50,000 to the president of UDWJA as a token of appreciation for the annual sports meet, on occasion.
Additional SP Vishnuvardan wished all the players well for the events of the day. Participation is important in sports than winning the prize, he said and hoped the harmony between police personnel and the journalists continues to exist as it did in the past.
It was a fulfilling day for the otherwise busy journalists. Games like tug of war, kabaddi, shot put, hitting pots, long jump, running race, musical chairs, volleyball were organised amongst many others. Journalists who participated in the sports meet came from various media organisations in Karkala, Kundapura, Udupi.
President of the Udupi District Working Journalists' Association, Jayakar Suvarna presided over the programme.
Udupi district information department officer Rohini, assistant director sports and youth empowerment department Roshan Shetty, CEO of Jayadev Motors Jayaram, sports secretary Nazeer, and others were present.
Secretary Ganesh Pandelu welcomed the assembly. Nagraj compered the programme. Treasurer Rajesh Shetty proposed the vote of thanks.
