Panaji, Jan 31: International airport controversy fears to raise its head again with the committee headed by Goa chief minister Digamber Kamat giving its node for this Greenfield airport project on Goa-Maharashtra border.

Based on the report submitted by International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the committee comprising of members of parliament Shripad Naik, Fransisco Sardinha and Shantaram Naik besides the chief minister and chief secretary J P Singh, has given in principle approval for the project.

The committee headed by Kamat has said that this airport is required as existing Dabolim airport will get more congested and will not be able to handle the air traffic in the years to come.

Goa is increasingly getting popular as tourism destination and also huge chunk of corporate clients fly to this state on the western coast.

Mired in political controversies, the project has always been objected by south goa politicians including state public works department minister Churchill Alemao. Alemao had even led a public campaign against the airport which stemmed from the contention that Mopa airport will eliminate economy in South Goa.

Alemao, who left congress and formed his own political outfit named Save Goa Front, which had oppose to international airport as one of the agenda, is now finding himself amidst thick clouds.

This former congressman has already merged his party into congress and now will have to abide by the decisions taken by congress leadership.

What will Alemao do now? This south goa politician has already issued a press statement opposing the airport. But he seems to be rather toothless this time. He can just verbally argue but can't act. Any action of his which is against the leadership can invite him disciplinary action.

So, if circumstances are studied, it is ample clear that Mopa airport will be a reality. But when it will actually materialize is a thing to ponder about.

Why should Goa have an airport more strategic to support Maharahtra state than its own. Goans should fully support Churchill Alemao. Goa is a major international tourist destination, & currently having 80% of chartered flights coming to Goa (stats are true). Most international tourists want direct flights to Goa, rather than coming via Bombay, due to typical harassment on arrival at airport.

Indian govt has not given permission yet to airlines wanting to have flights to Goa. Why should Goans have to allow the Indian Navy prime area for their services, when the current Dabolim airport was originally built by the portugese for civilian use. As Goans we have to suffer by having absolutely no direct flights coming to Goa. Coming by Indian Airlines / Air India (Monopoly), via the only direct flights to Goa is so pathethic that it resembles travel worse than a Bus without its nuts&bolts.

We as Goans need our Dabolim airport to be expanded (& let the Navy go elsewhere ... probably given Mopa in exhange. Goans wake up, unite, fight & support for your right to have the land that was protected by your ancestors. Do not let other states invade our golden land of sunshine & convert it ito a dustbin (check what the Konkan railway has brought into Goa). Viva Goa .. Viva Goenkar's

Konkan Railway passes thro' North Goa to South Goa,but a taxi fare from Dabolim Airport to Candolim cost at present Rs.700-800,a fare comparable to Volvo buses from Mumbai to Goa of 700kms.long.Many industries are in South Goa. Isnt North people in Goa - goans? Dabolim airport is defense airport. Why selfishness to promote improvement like the Konkan Railway for airport?

I think MLAss , MPs are fraud they run after money and not think about the people how they will suffer they dont care about the people life they care only about to fill their banks and decorate their houses such type of people Goa people must not give courage for the voting time. I think Churchill Alemao has to come back coz he is think about the people and not like other MLAs, MPs to full their banks.

Now that Churchill & Reginaldo have merged SGF with the Congress, CM Kamat & his pro-Maharashtra lobby within the party think that they can silence them. We want Churchill, Reginald and other like minded leaders within the Congress and the NCP to rise to the occasion and if need be defy the so called High Command which still thinks that Goa is a Union Territory and not a full fledged state within the Indian Union. Congress big-wigs beware... the common man is watching.

Politicians are politicalizing each and every issue in Goa. Are Goans MLAs, MPs are elected by the people for their personal gains or for the development of the state of Goa and to protect the interest of Goans? There are still politicians in Goa whose bodies are in Goa and heart in Maharashtra. First of all let us ask ourselves DO WE REQUIRE ANOTHER AIRPORT? The state is very small.

Can we afford to provide land for the airport? The land is very precious for us and must use it with careful planning. There are several Countries which have got only one airport and Goa being such a small state do we require another airport? The presence of Navy which are training their Pilots at Dabolim is very risky affair.

By chance one aircraft crashes in Mormugao area where there are fuel tanks, can we imagine what will be the result of this crash? The time has come to shift (or at least limit their activities) Navy from Dabolim and expand the airport where even A-380 could land & handle the traffic.Enough land is available over there. All Politicians!!! Please do not play with people of Goa. It can be suicidal.
