Puttur, Dec 29: In an incident which happened at Uppinangady in the taluk, the body of a person, who was selling helmets by the side of the national highway near Kumaradhara Bridge in that town, was found lying till evening as there were no claimants. The deceased has been identified as Nagesh, son of Suresh (29) from Marutinagar in Hosadurg taluk of Chitradurga district.
Nagesh had set up his helmet sale business near the highway, and he lived with his wife and children inside Uppinangady town. As his wife and children had left to attend the marriage function of a relative at the family's native place, Nagesh and his father-in-law were the only occupants of their residence here since some days. After dinner on Tuesday, Nagesh had slept inside the tent that was pitched for selling helmets. At around 5 am on Wednesday, his father-in-law tried to wake up Nagesh but realized that he had breathed his last in sleep.
As the wife of Nagesh was not in town, no one was prepared to shift the body. Nagesh's father-in-law, who was alone and does not have anyone here, remained helpless. Neither the police nor the local panchayat helped him to shift the body either to his rented home or to the mortuary of the government hospital nearby awaiting arrival of the family members. The body therefore, remained deserted beside the highway till Wednesday evening.
In the evening, Nagesh's father, wife and other relatives arrived. Thereafter the body was taken to the graveyard at Uppinangady where funeral was conducted. Locals said this incident in which the body of the deceased was allowed to lie by the roadside the entire day in a neglected state has made the so-called civilized society to hang its head in shame.
