Bagalkot, Dec 17: In a strange, disgusting incident reported from Yallatti village under Banahatti police station limits in the district, a youth murdered his mother and then hid it inside the water tank of the house. Reportedly he was angry about the illicit relationship his widowed mother was involved in and was deeply concerned that the family reputation was being compromised.
Sarojini Shantappa Gulekar (48) from Yallatti village was murdered. Her son, Shivanand, has been accused of committing this crime. The accused surrendered to the police with some delay. Reports say that Shivanand was angry that his mother was trying to sell off the family house because of the influence of the person with whom she had become intimate.
Shivanand had repeatedly sounded his mother against continuing with her relationship but she denied having any such affair, it is said. Shivanand was aware that she was trying to sell the house, and he had fought several times with his mother over this issue, accusing her of bringing disrepute to the family.
On the night of December 13, he again fought with his mother. Growing livid during the fight, he crushed her head with a stone, stuffed clothes into her mouth, and killed her. With the aim of somehow concealing the crime, he hid the body in the water tank of his house. The next day, he roamed around in the village, but during this period, was overcome with a sense of fear of what he had done. He then directly went to Banahatti police station and surrendered before the police, duly explaining what he had done.
The police registered a case, rushed to his house, and retrieved the body from the water tank. A postmortem was conducted on December 15 at Banahatti. It is said that he is married, but his wife was not at home when the murder was committed. The murder became public knowledge only on Friday December 16.
