Udupi, Nov 3: Veteran Congress leader and social worker, M A Gafoor, has been given an important responsibility in the form of chairmanship of Karnataka State Minorities Development Corporation. Gafoor's long wait has paid off in the form of post in which he can very well show his mettle.
Gafoor has come up the hierarchy in the Congress from grass root level over a period stretching over three decades. He was district president of Congress committee for 12 years, and got elected thrice as zilla panchayat member. He had served as secretary of district youth Congress and national youth Congress units. Currently, he is secretary of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee in charge of party affairs in Shivamogga district. On Wednesday, when the news about him being made chairman of the above corporation came, he was touring Shivamogga district.
Gafoor's name was in the reckoning till final stages for being given legislative council seat. He was also tipped as prospective candidate for Kaup legislative assembly constituency, but this opportunity too had slipped out of his hands at the last minute. When he was made chairman of Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation last year, he declined the offer, duly expressing the opinion that this position should go to fishermen. He ensured that the position was given to a candidate from fishermen community.
"I want to serve all sections of the society. Now, as chairman of minorities development corporation, my service will be confined to only a few communities," Gafoor noted with concern.
