Bengaluru: HC stays suspension of Mysore varsity registrar

Bengaluru, Oct 26 (DHNS): The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday stayed the order passed by the higher education department suspending University of Mysore registrar C Basavaraju and principal of Yuvaraja's College Nanjegowda.

The high court stayed the order based on the separate petitions filed by Basavaraju and Nanjegowda. The two were placed under suspension on various charges, mainly for violation of reservation rules while selecting 49 assistant professors for Yuvaraja's College in Mysuru on a contract basis. Basavaraju’s counsel contended that as per Section 17 (3) of the Karnataka State Universities Act, “a registrar neither has a duty to appoint nor he is an appointing authority.”

The counsel stated that 50% reservation was provided for the appointment of assistant professors though there was no law mandating quota in appointments of staff on contract basis.
