Bantwal, Oct 22: In a serial accident that occurred on NH75, Farangipet junction on Friday evening, October 21, the driver of a tipper illegally transporting sand has sustained serious injury to his leg.
A lorry heading to B C Road from Mangaluru applied brakes all of a sudden in order to avoid collision with a bike that was taking a U turn in front of the lorry. Meanwhile, an Eicher that was right behind the lorry also applied brakes. However the Eicher that was speeding towards B C Road did not stop and hit the lorry that was illegally laden with sand from behind. The tipper driver sustained serious injury to his leg in the impact. Local people rushed him to the hospital. His name and address were not immediately available.
As the tipper lorry stopped in the middle of the road, traffic was thrown out of gear. Bantwal traffic police station SI Chandrashekharayya and staff who were inspecting vehicles close by rushed to the place and made way for vehicles.
Anguish: Local people expressed anguish that illegal sand laden tippers and lorries speeding unhindered and recklessly driven are plying on NH75 causing accidents. “Sand mining is going on even though there is a ban on sand mining in the district. Police, department of geology and revenue departments are not taking any action against sand laden vehicles and only rarely charge a minimum fine on one or two of them,” said the people.
