Scarlett Rape and murder : 8 years on, Goa court acquits accused Samson, Placido

Panjim, Sep 23 (Agencies) : A Goa court acquitted on Friday two men accused of raping and killing British schoolgirl Scarlett Keeling in 2008, triggering outrage in a case that put a global spotlight on the dark underbelly of India’s tourism industry.

“I find them not guilty of all charges,” Judge Vandana Tendulkar said after the trial of Samson D’Souza and Placido Carvalho in the state capital Panaji.

Fifteen-year-old Keeling’s bruised and half-naked body was found on popular Anjuna beach eight years ago. Her death made headlines worldwide and triggered a debate on how unsafe the popular tourist destination was for foreigners, especially women.

Police initially dismissed the teenager’s death as an accident but opened a murder probe after Keeling’s mother, Fiona MacKeown, pushed for a second autopsy, which proved she had been drugged and raped.

MacKeown also accused local authorities of trying to cover up the death to protect drug gangs operating in Goa.

“I’m devasatated,” Mackeown told news channel NDTV amid criticism about the sluggish pace of the case

Several weeks after the attack, local men D’Souza and Carvalho were arrested.

Shamefully There was a celebration within criminals yesterday. Normally UK government takes these things strongly, Mother must approach UK officials . Even if mother challenges still goonda may pay her lawyers and twist and win again. She must involve British Government and punish the criminals and hang them. Alternatively she must talk to Sushma but if BJP leaders are supporting Goondas that's of no use. Better involve British Government

Delhi has already earned the title as rape capital of the world. Nex t Goa will also earn the same. They always say in India if you have money you can get away with murder or anything . I hope Supreme court takes over this case and gives justice to the poor girl and her family.

Police department should work hard and collect strong evidence against culprit, court should consider each rape case with very strict view there should not be any soft corner approach towards rape accused, same time our law makers should amend existing old section of IPC with suitable changes.

This shows very very poor standards of Legal System/police in India especially in Goa which is haven for illegal elements and government does nothing about this . Its the question of credibility of our legal system. Better Central (Parikar of goa) interferes and reorder the probe?. Does he the guards to that and save our credibility .It took many weeks to arrest the accused. If they are not the culprits who are the culprits then and why we are unable to solve a straight forward case? shame shame shame

The drug cartels in Goa are very strong, powerful and influential. A judgement of this sort was expected. Till today no one belonging to the drug mafia have been convicted for crime in Goa. The police are well hand in glove with the mafia.
