With 26 career Olympic medals, Phelps equals India's record


Rio de Janeiro, Aug 10 (IANS): Ace US swimmer Michael Phelps won two more Olympic golds here late on Tuesday, taking his total career medals tally in the Summer Games to 26 -- which equals what India as a country has achieved since it started participating in 1900.

Phelps won the first gold of the day in the 200-metre butterfly, his favourite event, and then led his team to victory in the 4x200 freestyle relay. In the 200-metre event he clocked 1:53.36, while in the relay, the team finished at 7:00.66.

Overall, the 31-year-old athlete has racked up 26 Olympic medals, 22 of them gold and two each of silver and bronze. In contrast, India's tally from the 33 Summer Games it has participated in is: Nine golds, six silvers and 11 bronze medals.
