Hazare seeks total prohibition in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Jul 28 (IANS): Veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare on Wednesday reiterated his demand for "total prohibition" in Maharashtra and urged the government to set up a "gram suraksha dal (village protection force)" to combat problems arising out of alcoholism.

He met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and asked him to consider setting up such a village force in rural areas comprising members from the local villages.

"Fadnavis was positive to the suggestion and said he would come out with a draft bill on the issue soon. Let the government work on it and take a decision," Hazare told media persons later.

Elaborating, he said currently there are several issues like jurisdiction of the state excise department and the police machinery which lack coordination and "most times they pass the responsibility to each other".

Here, the village force would find the illegal liquor joints, bust them, make a 'panchanama' (initial situation report), then inform the excise department to seize the liquor and call police to lodge the cases, he explained.

Hazare also blamed increasing liquor consumption for the growing number of road accidents and other evils.

Citing the example of his native Ralegan-Siddhi village, he said 20 years ago there were 40 liquor distillation plants which were removed with public support and now nobody in the village drinks or consumes tobacco.

"If the people display a strong will and the government supports them, it is possible to implement total prohibition and make it a liquor-free state," Hazare said.

As Anna said we must strive towards making the entire country as liquor free...no..no...free liquor country. The situation in the country is such that it has become difficult for the common man to make both ends meet due to sky rocking prices of daily essentials. When people get free liquor, can at least forget for a few hrs the high prices of daily essentials.......!!!
This is one way of helping the poor class who are not able to lead a comfortable life.

Good move. Total prohibition all over the country is the demand of the nation. Will Hazare fast for this demand and succeed. He failed in curbing corruption or getting back black money into India. Instead his fast unseated an Honest PM Dr Manmohan Singh and brought in another who knows neither to govern the country or manage his partymen.

    MICHAEL NORONHA,

Prohibition has never worked and it will never work. If govt wants to bring prohibition let them bring it. All it will do the reduce the income for the govt from taxes on alcohol and also it will increase the cost of policing the prohibition. So this will be additional burden on our already ''great'' law enforcement authorities.

Prohibition will provide an excellent opportunity for underworld elements to get involved in business of supplying the booz. They will earn more money and with money also comes power to buy our already ''honest'' politicians.

Dont believe what i say. Here is what WHO report had to say about prohibition - The WHO 2014 report on alcohol and health revealed that 50% of the alcohol consumed in India is unrecorded and is part of the non-tax paid, non-commercial and counterfeit activity. It argued that measures such as prohibition led to excessive restrictions creating risks to consumers, constraining commercial and consumer freedoms, and exacerbating black market.

And finally, though the idea of prohibition will reduce the ills of the society is good one but in practice it does not work. We live in a society which requires alcohol to give disgruntled citizens an option to forget their worries. Trust me, if whole country was sober it would be unstable like many of the countries that have total ban on alcohol.
