Goa traffic police to get stricter for rule violators


Panaji, Jul 10: For the first half of the year, traffic cell of the Goa police has booked nearly two lakh cases against traffic violators. Since the beginning of this year, the traffic cell has conducted various drivers to reduce road accidents. On an average, one person died in Goa in road accident every 30 hours.

During the first half of 2016, 151 persons lost their lives in road accidents as compared to 149 last year.

"To curtail the menace of an alarming/increasing rate of accidents and fatalities, strict enforcement of traffic laws is being carried out by the traffic police. Till June 30 this year, 1,97,518 violators in total have been booked for violations that have direct bearing on road accidents and discipline on road," said superintendent of police, traffic cell, Vishram Borker.

1,160 cases have been registered for driving under the influence of alcohol, 1,146 cases have for over-speeding, 585 cases against those using mobile while driving, 892 for dangerous driving, 2,627 triple-seat riding, 7,349 for tinted glasses, 1,525 for driving without a number plate, 2,508 for improper number plate, 48 for driving under age, 201 for using modified vehicles, 1,351 for overtaking on bridge and 644 for dazzling lights.

He also said that to ensure the right of pedestrian on zebra crossings, a special drive was undertaken by the traffic police from June 15 to June 30. During the said drive, pedestrians were informed about their rights on zebra crossings and that 902 motorists were booked for denying the rights of pedestrians on the crossings.

"Traffic police will continue to take action against motorists denying the right of a pedestrian on zebra crossings as well as against those violating traffic laws. Motorists are requested to respect the right of pedestrians and drive safely and responsibly," Borkar said.

Goa police will further toughen their stand against traffic violations, and those found flouting traffic laws will have their driving licence seized. The police also intend to send a recommendation to the traffic department to keep the seized licences under a minimum three-month suspension.
