Fought referendum with head and heart, says Cameron

London, June 24 (IANS): British Prime Minister David Cameron, announcing he was stepping down, on Friday said he fought the referendum on the European Union with "head and heart" and was proud of what he had done.

"I am very proud of what I have done as a prime minister," Cameron said in a speech at the Downing Street after a majority of the British in a referendum voted to leave the EU in a historic decision.

"I have fought the referendum with head and heart. I always thought that one has to confront big decisions and not duck them," Cameron said as he announced his decision to step down as the Prime Minister.

"I formed a coalition, delivered a referendum in Scotland and gave the public a referendum on Europe."

He said the referendum was not about him "but the British people have decided to follow another path".
