Former Goa tourism minister booked in land scam case


Panaji, Jun 23 (IANS): Former Goa Tourism Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar and a civil service officer have been booked by the state anti-corruption bureau in connection with a land scam, a senior police official said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters Superintendent of Police (ACB) Vimal Gupta said that Halarnkar and former Goa Housing Board managing director Elvis Gomes had been booked for handing over land acquired by the Board in 2009 for the purpose of building a housing colony, to a private party, one Vincent Gracious who claimed to be an agriculturist, and in turn later commercially developed the same plot.

"A First Information Report has been filed under section 120 (B) and 420 of IPC along with other sections of prevention of corruption act 1988 has been registered," Gupta said.

Halarnkar, a former state Nationalist Congress Party president, had joined the Congress party last month.
