Commissioner blames it on company’s security lapse

Pune, Nov 5: It was Jyotikumari Choudhary’s last day at her job in Spectramind in Pune, when, on her way to work in the wee hours of Friday November 2, she was raped and murdered.

Choudhary, 21, met a gruesome end, allegedly in the hands of the driver of the transport provided by the BPO and his accomplice, when she was headed for her office to report for night shift on the last day of her job on Thursday November 1.

A police officer in the team investigating the crime told DNA, “She was busy on the mobile phone talking to her friend in Bangalore and could hardly notice in the dark the cab diverting towards a small village across the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.”

The police have arrested the cab driver Purushottam Borate and his friend Pradip Kokde, who allegedly sexually assaulted the woman before strangulating her to death with her ‘dupatta’.

Meanwhile, Pune police commissioner Jayant Umranikar on Sunday said, “It was the company’s security failure that led to the incident.”

“We have been briefing the BPO’s in the city time and again to review their security measures. We had given briefings to BPOs, especially in case of the women
employees, before the Thursday’s incident,” Umranikar told DNA.

Both Borate and Kokde have reportedly told the investigators that they were under the influence of alcohol at the time of committing the crime.

However, the police have ruled out the possibility stating that this could be a move for their defence in the court of law. They were produced before the court, which remanded them to police custody till November 12.

Meanwhile, the Talegaon Dabhade police said that the medical reports confirmed that Choudhary was raped.

“We have also found that driver Borate was involved in assault cases. However, we are also investigating whether there were some more people involved in the crime,” said investigating officer and assistant police inspector Rajendra Patil, of Talegaon Dabhade police station. He added that the incident was pre-planned.
