People angry with Nigerians due to their attitude: Parsekar

Panaji, Jun 1, 2016, PTI: Notwithstanding Centre's damage- control efforts after the row over attack on African nationals, Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar today sparked fresh furore with his remark that people in general are angry with Nigerians because of their "different attitude".

"In general, people are angry with Nigerians and not other foreigners. I feel they (Nigerians) have a different attitude," Parsekar told PTI without elaborating. The CM was responding to a question on recent allegations of rape against a Nigerian national in Goa and racial attacks in Delhi.

"We get people from all other countries, but in general the people of Goa are very much annoyed with their behaviour, attitude, their way of life...because on many occasions I hear complaints against Nigerians," said Parsekar, who heads the BJP government in the coastal state.

His remarks drew flak from Opposition Congress which alleged that it reflected the "racist attitude" of the BJP government.

"First (MoS) V K Singh, now Goa Chief Minister belonging to BJP is passing disparaging remarks against people from African continent and nations including Nigeria," Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said.

"Don't they realize that we have historical relationship with the entire African continent including the struggle which Mahatma Gandhi led in Africa. The manner in which we are humiliating tourists, especially from African nations speaks volumes about the racist attitude of the BJP government," he said.

Responding to another question, Parsekar said the state government is scouting for a place to house foreigners illegally staying in the state.

"Not just Nigerians. We will keep all the foreigners staying illegally in the state in this detention facility," he said.

"We are searching for the place to have detention facility. We can even convert any of the existing establishments into the facility," Parsekar said.

There have been a series of attacks on African nationals in the last few days including killing of a Congolese youth in national capital and assault on a 23-year-old Nigerian student in Hyderabad, drawing outrage from African envoys.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj yesterday announced a slew of steps including a country-wide sensitisation campaign even as she asserted that the killing of a Congolese youth was not a "racial crime".

Swaraj, who along with her junior Minister V K Singh, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and other senior officials met a group of African envoys and students in Delhi, also asserted that India, which is the land of Gandhi and Buddha and fought consistently against racial discrimination, can never have a racist mindset.

We should not forget that there are 50 times more Indians in Nigeria than Nigerians in India. The ratio is similar in many other african countries. So, before we talk about deporting all Nigerians out of India we need to think about the boomerang effect. We should rather learn to differentiate between the good and the bad apples and take logical steps.

its a know fact that most of the Nigerians in particular are quite notorious and are black listed in many countries . India should think of curtailing the VISA if its getting out of hands. There are lot of other african countries like Kenya where people are much more easier to deal with and law abiding in general

Sir, you are telling an open truth. I have met many citizens of different African nations, they differ greatly. The Kenyan citizens are easy to deal with.

I had some classmates from Nigeria, they have a different attitude of some genetically inherited arrogance, an odd nature tricking others with a broad smile. The number of rip offs undertaken by the Nigerians through lottery winning and other con-games are too many to count all over the world. While I met some business people having business with Nigeria, they told me that it takes a different psychology to deal with them and the next rank goes to Ghana in too cautious deal but the rest of the African nations are fairly easy to deal with.

My personal friend from Houston told me, he was fooled by one of his long time Nigerian friend. He sent a shipment of goods on letter of credit and got the money.
Then his friend told him that he will send a bank draft for $ 60000 instead of going through the trouble of letter of credit. My friend got the draft of the Barclay's Bank, send the shipment but the draft was a fake draft, thus lost all the money. I am not telling that all the people of Nigeria are in the same boat but these stories are causing greater fear.

But, this is a very complicated situation for India in the diplomatic level.

I fully agree with you Mr.Mathew . Its better India curtails the Visa for these countries than get a bad name as Racist . Some countries dont even accept credit card payments from Nigeria ...Sadly Indian media is going the other way round and bringing bad name to the country

I strongly object to the comments made by Sid and have serious reservations on some of the issues with As Mathew's comments.

First of all it is incorrect to fix a nationality of nigerian to a dishonest friend. This comment is filled with deep prejudice. There have been instances of brothers duping each others, there have been instances of a neighbor duping ( as is the recent case reported in daijiworld).

I am very sorry to say Mr. Mathew after spending many years in developed world , living with different nationalities you dont realize you have such high prejudice against a nation.

It is true about online crime having many a time roots to Nigeria. But then again to suggest that all Nigerians are bad in plainly lacks wisdom.

Our tragedy in India is that incompetent people are sitting in CMs chair and can talk what they want. Goa CMs comments try to give legitimacy to the bias against a group of people and portray denial of racial prejudice which is inherent in all of us.

In India our prejudices are against caste system. In Kerala the Christians do show prejudice against different origins among them. You can see that very clearly in their matrimonial requirements.

In Many ways Nigeria is like India, with lots of poor people( like in India) , a middle class and corrupt and rich politicians( like us).

There are a group of people who are street smart ( we do have our fair share of people who dupe others) and have found internet to dupe people ( middle aged blue collar people longing for company) mainly in the developed world. Dollar has more value than rupee and therefore we are less important to them.

The Nigerian youth grow up with Indian( settled in Nigeria) friends, there is a mix of culture and generally have a good opinion of Indians.

Therefore for the misdeeds of few : to categorize a community based on their nationality and skin color is a very primitive of us in this globalized world where every one is interdependent.
