Udupi, Oct 16: International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction was organized by Dr TMA Pai Centre at Manipal near here on Monday October 15.
Speaking on the occasion, D K Shami, fire advisor, ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India said that in order to make India safe and to make it a developed nation both central and state government, the community, civil society organizations and the media play a major role.
He further said that people believe that man-made as well as natural disasters are inevitable and their effects can be minimized by research and proper training, he opined.
He called for a “multi-pronged strategy” for instigating development efforts which are aimed towards the reduction of risks and improvement he said.
S S Pabla, MIT director in his welcome address said that disasters can be expected at any time. Hence everyone should accept the fact that no one can prevent the damage caused by the natural disasters on mankind. However, with careful planning and positioning of knowledge, skills and resources one can reduce the effects to a great extent, he added.
Dr H S Ballal, pro-chancellor, Manipal University presided over the function. Prof N K Garg, dean and faculty of Architecture and Prof Raveendra Deshmukh were present.
