Prison doctor shunted for fudging Bhujbal's medical records

Mumbai, Apr 22 (PTI): An inquiry by the Prisons department into the admission of former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal to St George Hospital here has revealed that a doctor at Arthur Road Jail had manipulated papers to help the jailed NCP leader.

Bhujbal, remanded in judicial custody in an alleged money laundering case, was admitted to ICU of the multi-speciality hospital in South Mumbai on April 18 after he complained of severe chest pain and high blood pressure.

Bipin Kumar Singh, IG Prisons, said jail doctor Rahul Ghule has been shifted out of the Arthur Road jail and sent back to the health department. Also, "strict action" has been recommended against the doctor, he said.

"Bhujbal was supposed to go to St George Hospital for a dental treatment but Ghule changed his medical papers without the knowledge of Arthur Road Jail CMO and recommended that he get admitted there for some other reason," Singh told PTI.

"If a prisoner has a medical ailment, he has the right to get medical treatment. But, never is a prisoner has taken anywhere except J J Hospital. Ghule has been fired as he was found guilty and we have recommended strict action against him," he said.

Singh said that the motive behind Ghule's conduct and whether he received favours for it will be ascertained after the health department completes its probe into the matter.

The former PWD Minister has been lodged in Arthur Road Jail for a month after ED arrested him for alleged involvement in the construction of Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi and the Kalina land grabbing case.

Maharashtra Minister of State for Home (Urban) Ranjit Patil had ordered a Director General of Police (DGP) level probe into allegations of VIP treatment being accorded to some detainees in lieu of monetary considerations at Arthur Road Jail.

His orders came after Ghule, in a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on April 6, had alleged that jail authorities were coercing and threatening inmates lodged for economic offences and forcing them to cough up lakhs of rupees for availing VIP treatment.

Here is a posting from Washington post about Indian doctors.

How Bad Are India's Medical Schools? Very, Say New Reports
Recent studies and reports have cast serious doubts on the quality and ethics of the country's vast medical schooling system. (Representational Image)
MELBOURNE: India is world-famous for its doctors, and it produces some of the world's best, from reputable institutions in and out of the country. There are more medical colleges and teaching hospitals in India than anywhere else - 579 to be exact.

But a couple of recent studies and reports have cast serious doubts on the quality and ethics of the country's vast medical schooling system. The most recent revealed that more than half of those 579 didn't produce a single peer-reviewed research paper in over a decade (2005-2014), and that almost half of all papers were attributed to just 25 of those institutions.

Producing research papers isn't a direct indicator of the quality of education at a given institution, or of the health care that might be provided there. But as Samiran Nundy, a Delhi-based senior gastrointestinal surgeon who authored one of the studies, told the Telegraph newspaper, "These findings support long-standing suspicions that for many private colleges in the country, medical education is just a business."

That is a suspicion that underlies other investigations, too. A four-month-long probe by Reuters found that since 2010, "at least 69 Indian medical colleges and teaching hospitals have been accused of such transgressions or other significant failings, including rigging entrance exams or accepting bribes to admit students," and that "one out of every six of the country's 398 medical schools has been accused of cheating, according to Indian government records and court filings."

    Excellent information.
While I agree to your point that we are in a much better situation than 1962 and china would understand our military power.
But disagree with one point – why will china really worry on 1.25 billion population? Most of them are good for nothing. You can see from comments that they just want to see negativity from current regime. They wont appreciate even if india turns into super power under this regime.
So, when you count on India, count military, count economy, but don’t count useless population blindly as an advantage for India. Only a small percentage of this 1.25 bil is ready to live for this country, love this country and die for this country..
