Abu Dhabi, Mar 29 (IANS/WAM): Efforts were ongoing to tackle a huge fire that gutted at least two residential buildings in the UAE city of Ajman.

The fire broke out in the Ajman One residential cluster of 12 towers, close to the border with Sharjah, on Monday night. Fire mainly damaged Tower 1.

The civil defence authority in Ajman city said its operations room received a call around 9.45 p.m. The civil defence, rescue and ambulance teams were rushed to the scene.

Several units battled the huge blaze well into the night. Flames raged while the area has been cordoned off, leading to huge traffic jam in Ajman and Sharjah.

Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman, and Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, were overseeing the efforts to put out the fire.

Fires in skyscrapers are common in the UAE. On the New Year's Eve, a fire engulfed a 63-storey building opposite the world's tallest skyscraper Burj Khalifa.
